since i done some propper GPU overclocking. can some one remind me how long I have to run furmark for before an overclock is 100% stable?

Im also new to Furmark - does the program detect 'artifacts' in stability test mode like ATi too use to?

Watch the donut spin and look for black squares apperaing. Its stable if it doesn't BSOD in the first couple of seconds... I usually let it run for two minutes. Two minutes and no artifacts = stable.

I personally would run it for up to 10-15 minutes simply because the card is still heating up after 2 minutes. Once the temperature gets to it's max and runs for a couple of minutes I'm usually okay with it then.

ive had a card run for 15 mins then die so just leave it on a long time like 20mins, if its stable for 5 mins do a bump up and keep doing that till it crashes

then start to pull the clock back till its stable for a long time

I don't use FurMark. It's just torture for a video card as no real application will stress it out so much. I generally use a game to test stability, much more fun.

Ran the Furmark Xtreme Burn mode on my GTX the other day for over an hour for the Ultra Stable club. Only thing that happened is my room got a little toasty

Runing Furmark for 10 mins is plenty of time. I found increasing core first then memory lead to a more stable OC.

true, but no application comes near to stressing a CPU like OCCT or Prime95, but we still use that don't we

. I've always set my clock, run furmark for 15min, if no artifacts then keep upping it.

However i'd recommend using GPUTool, the successor to atitool. Though it's still in beta, setting your clocks, using find max, and the stress test work great for me. It stresses my video card just the same as furmark but instead of 2 apps you just have to run 1. I use the same rule, 15min of GPUTool stress test and it's stable imo

I use OCCT on medium settings but that's it. There is absolutely no point in torturing your hardware with such things. It's just popular. Vantage is great to check your GPU overclocks. So are many Steam applications.

Vantage is ugly as hell. I would much rather play Crysis Warhead for a few hours than look at the butt ugly GPU tests of Vantage for the same time.

Agreed, I was just throwing it out there. Left4Dead is great at crashing even slightly unstable OC's. :toast:

Is it just me, or did futuremark just not care for Vantage? The UI is shit, the game tests are console ugly and you get piis poor FPS, which you just know even on crap hardware crap looking graphics like that in a real game you would get like 60FPS. Bioshock looks better than Vantage and how old is that now?..

i guess i use medium as well then. OCCT i much prefer over Prime95, no need to run it 12 dam hours. Didn't know that bout l4d, love that game. I also oc in the order of core/memory(core/shaders/mem when i had my 8800GT). what about u guys?

You're right Futuremark doesn't care abou Vantage. That's what they sold it to Nvidia as a useless physics test that proves nothing.

Vantage was strictly for testing dx10 only, the fact that it runs crap on machines shows how poorly it's been coded. The fact that it looks better, I dunno what to tell you on that.

I ran Furmark all night last week without any problems to HD4770. Highest temps 62 degrees celsius. With the ugly cheap looking cooler.

No, I said Vantage looks like shit. Bioshock looks better than Vantage, it really does. Hell, 3DM06 looks way better than Vantage. Vantage is a butt ugly POS, I'm glad I didn't pay for it.

It's worth remembering that Furmark is an OpenGL bench and therefore will not necessarily stress fully every corner of the GPU's architecture at 100% although little will heat up the GPU (apart from OCCT's GPU stress test) as much as furmark, I have run Furmark in the past for 30 minutes fully stable only for 3D Mark 2006 to crash in the first 30 seconds.

I would suggest a combination of 15 minutes furmark, 15 minutes OCCT GPU stress test and then as a confirmation, either 3D Mark 2006 or an in game bench such as in Crysis.

I used OCCTs GPU test all on defaults.

Pretty sure I left it for the whole hour.

Then I played some games, all seemed fine.

Then I loaded up GTA IV and it locked up within minutes, I had to back down my memory clock two steps to make it stable.

Its a great game for stability testing.
