Dear Santa,

I want to upgrade my primary PC this year, my MB/CPU is almost 5 years old now, and I've got the upgrade itch.

It's going to be built around an unlocked Ivy Bridge CPU, namely the 3770k

But first, I've got a few questions for you:

  • What chipsets support that CPU? I think the X79 and X77?
  • Is the 3770k going to be replaced with a better model, better stepping, etc in 2012 or early 2013?

Oh and is the world going to end in Dec 2012?

Thx,
Little Johnny

I was thinking before, lol. If it does end, can't take anything with. If it doesn't, I'll have a nice new rig :)

Ivy Bridge is supported by B75, Q75, Q77, H77, Z75, Z77, X79 and the Sandy Bridge chipsets. As for the 2012 fuss, all the people I've talked to who think the world will end on that date strangely aren't willing to sign over to me all their possessions, effective Dec. 24th, 2012.

X79 can be a great value for multi GPU use, and the i7 3820 is cheaper than 3770K, but about $80 locally, which offsets the added board cost for X79-based boards.

SKT2011 wil lget CPU upgraDE IN THE FUTURE, skt1155 IS DEAD-END, WITH hASWELL MOVING TO 1150.

Guess I hit caps, but i gotta run. :p

X79 and its twenty sisters use LGA 2011, so it won't work with the CPU you listed.
