Its dying after constant use for 13 years

Its had a hard life and constant daily use
Its outlived Two socket 478 Three different socket 775 a 1156 and now its dying on the 1366
Its had Win 98 Me Xp Pro and Win 7

I use drives like that for emulation to dump ISO on.

Usually I take the data off do a low level format check the stats again if ok I use for emulation.

Have you guys ever got an official S.M.A.R.T. warning? I got one once. It showed up at POST. I've got a pic of it somewhere. Been searching for a while now and can't find it though. Anyway...basically said something to the effect of "S.M.A.R.T. has detected that your HDD is about to die, it would be wise to backup your data before it does". Sure enough...the very next day it kicked the bucket. I've never seen a warning like that again. Though I've seen many more HDD failures since.

EDIT: Here's one I found by googling.

I've got one right now that's similar to the OP's. It'll be 12 years old on 11-28-17. Still runs. Barely. Needs CHKDSK on an almost daily basis to keep it going. I don't use it for anything serious...of course.

Maxtor was THE BEST HDD manufacturer EVER! I'd still be buying nothing but Maxtor drives if they were still around. Yes...I know there's still some external HDDs currently being sold with their name on them. But they aren't the same. Just Seagate trying to sell products using Maxtor's good name/reputation.

god knows how many hours it lived for (its still working but have to press F1 to boot)

tho the maxtor is Dying
It was a WD Raptor That did Died
no longer reads in Bios/CrystalDisk/file manager
Nothing of importance apart from a few games
Rip WD Raptor" You Spun to Fast"

ps Its no loss as i paid £5 for 3 S/H Raptors 18 months ago

So i guess i can still use it for "High Risk Storage" like some PORN

Get hitachi disk fitness test run that. Typically runs on all kinds of hdds.

My dad has Athlon 2800+, Abit motherboard with VIA chipset, Western Digital 80GB with 0 bad sectors for 13 years now.

I've got a WD 320GB that was the boot disk for my first Pentium 4 machine. Still works fine after being used as the boot disk for several machines up until I upgraded to a SSD last year. Good little hard drive, but jeez an SSD is the best upgrade for general daily use! I'm curious now to hook that little guy back up and see how many hours he's got logged.
