I'd fight for a HD4890 back. The HD5770 performs right about the same as an HD4870, not an HD4890. So they kind of screwed you.

So, as the 5770 is a little slower than a 4890 (yes, it overclocks to faster than a 4890, but that's not officially supported, so doesn't count) and if they can't get a 4890 and a 5850 is way over, then what should they do? The 5770 has a better feature set than the 4890 too, so the whole thing looks like one grey area to me.

I think you should have gotten that 5770 the 5850 is just to much better, but really it would have been better if it would have died when the 5830's come out

ive heard talk that there is not going to be a 5830, as the 5770 kinda replace it.

Im going to try and complain for a 5850, it might work. If not this will be up in the BST in the next week as i have no need for it in my system. My 4870x2 kills it and if i receive a 5870 it will kill it also.

O.P., you definitely got the shitty end of the stick on that RMA. While the HD 5770 is a great little card, it is not the equal (stock to stock - not to mention your OC'd card) of an HD 4890. I would complain. Loudly.

What they almost always send out are refurbished or repaired RMA cards. If they don't have an HD 4890 that fits that description demand a new-in-box one. I did that once with EVGA, going so far as to speak with the vice president of sales (Joe something-or-other) and they finally sent me a new card since they didn't have a comparable refurb model in stock for RMA requests. Its that old "squeaky wheel gets the grease" type thing. After enough phone calls to upper management they get tired of you.

I went thru the samething about a 7 weeks ago. I have 2 XFX GTX 285's in SLI both of them reg. with XFX. One of them went bad just one day started acting crazy (artifacts all of the time). I rma it to XFX and told them what it was doing. They got a hold of me about a week later and asked if I was runing them in SLI because both of them were reg with them, I said yes. They said that they didn't have any of the GTX 285's in stock and didn't know when they would have them. So I said I would wait, I waited for a month and they never did get any of the 285's in stock. They e-mailed me back and said they could send me a XFX 5850 instead. I said no because I was running them in SLI and wanted a 285 back. I asked to speak to a SUP. they said he would e-mail me back. Again several weeks later they e-mailed me and asked if a 5850 would be ok, I again said NO I wanted a 285 back so I could go SLI again, Never did hear from a SUP about all of this. Waited about 2 more weeks and finally gave up on the whole thing, gave in and e-mailed them and said send me the 5850. I got it and it is a awesome card, but I like Nvidia and wanted my 285 setup back. I ended finding somebody on the forums that wanted to trade his XFX 285GTX for the 5850. I found out if you argue with them they will not answer you, or make you wait forever before you get an answer. I would take the card and either sell it or find somebody on the forums that wants to trade with you, if you don't your in for a long wait.
Just my 2 cents worth and my opinion only. I understand your case is different than mine, I was just giving you a heads up about how they operate with RMA's.

In your case they should have said for you to send in your other 285 and they could have passed you a 5970. It would have been a better response but tech support has been on the decline since I can remember.

I would not send them my other 285 even if they offered. I fold 24/7 and have been for the last several years. Nvidia gpu's are the best right now at folding. I have never had any problems with Nvidia after several years of using them. This was the first time I've ever had to send anything in for a RMA (silently knocks on wood). I will stay with Nvidia till ATI gets their act together on folding and I start playing games that are more demanding on video cards. I play FPS and Nvidia takes care of them pretty good now. Everything worked out pretty good on the deal, I got what I wanted and the other person got what they wanted.:):toast:

But the 5770s are too slow. In crossfire they rarely outperform the 5850. =\

A 5770 would certainly out-perform your 4870 at most resolutions and generally would be an 'upgrade' (side-step?) to any 4870 owner, even a person with 1GB cards like myself.

On the other hand, I wouldn't consider it a fair trade for anyone with a 4890 as it (5770) offers lesser performance and is worth less.

I suspect it was given in RMA for his card due to it being the closest thing ATI have in terms of 4890 performance....that is without giving him a 5850 that performs like a 4870x2.

But the difference is miniscule. I went to this card from a 8800GTX and didn't see a very large difference. I knew that I wouldn't see much before I bought the card, but it's a larger one than the one between the 4870 and the 5770. And looking at this review http://www.techspot.com/review/209-ati-radeon-hd-5770/page6.html
it's about 50/50 which one does the best. So yeah, more than a sidestep. Hardly an upgrade and they left out the 1gb 4870, probably with good reason.

The 5700 series just seems so inconsistent to me. =\ There's such a big gap between the 5770 and 5850s.

They rarely out perform the 5870, but 5770CF regularly shoots the 5850 off the skies.
It is funny how people always underestimate the 5770 just because it is a mid-range card.

Edit: In HAWX the 5850 is even out performed by a pair of 5750s.

XFX is a great company, they could have easily not sent you a 5770. I'd say use it until you get your 5870 then off it to buy another or offset the cost of the 5870.

Either way, XFX rocks!

I would be pissed at XFX, let them know you feel short changed and hopefully they will step up.

The 5770 is better than nothing and a good card but yu didnt recieve the equivelant card and its up to XFX to step up.

I don't think it is XFX's fault here ;)
Tbh on the other hand i should be happy that they replaced it..... my loop leaked on the 4890 and it had 2 screws missing from the heatsink. Lucky i got anything lol
The fact that the OP gets a replacement at all, shows that XFX is a good company.

Its not so much of a "Fault" thing...When a company sells products it knows there are going to be a few times when they have to bite the bullet and lose a bit to keep the customer happy.

The 4890 was a top of the line card and the 5770 is a middle of the road one (a good middle of the road but middle none the less)

Nope, I have had many XFX cards though. I've used a few vendors in the past, but have had really good luck with XFX. Can't say I've ever dealt with their customer service though, but reading that they stand behind their products like that is good enough for me.

Doubt they'd replace the AGP 7900GT that burned up on me last year though.

@MKmods

I could not agree more, i think you understand were im coming from, this is not a moral stance this is a huge company and if they want to keep me happy they will give me a 5850.

Yeah im lucky to get a replacement after i rma'd a waterdamaged card but they have honoured that and im entitled to complain as a consumer if i wish.

Software Windows 7 Ultimate x64
i spoke to the retailer this morning and they said that XFX no longer makes the 4890 and they cant get hold of them. XFX gave a credit to the retailer for a defective card of only £95 as that is their worth now apparently as they are a last gen card. There is no way that they can give me a 4890 or a 5850 as i obviously only spent £150 with them. BUT they can offer a refund to me and i return the 5770. I might just end up selling the 5770 and cutting my losses/gain as the orginal 4890 was water damaged. if xfx gave the replacement i would have argued the point, but tbh i suppose i got a good deal taking everything into account.

In a state of flux...
Sell your 4870x2 and the 5770 and buy a 5870???

I'd just buy another 5770 and call it a job done...who really cares about 12 - 15% less power in games when a 5770 uses so little power at the side of the 48xx???

Dear reefer, the 5770 can go up to 1200mhz on water, making it faster then 4890.
