Tonight, I set out to run an i5-3570k NAKED! I recently did a de-lid and watched temps drop 13c at 4.8 GHz, of course that wasn't enough... now it's Direct Die, and great results.

This is the socket after prep:

Chip with AS5 (a mess, I ended up removing and cleaning it):

With Chip:

With block (Just for kicks):

First results:

1st try at 4.2Ghz Prime95:

I will be going higher and post results, enjoy for now!!!

Nice! De-liding just scares me to much, but it has great results. I think you can get 5GHz easy

how did you remove the socket clamp assembly? is it just those two screws at the top that you removed and the whole thing came off like that?

Maybe this method will relieve some of your fear?

I'm no intel expert but those temps look really good and excellent pictures as always.
Was that the stock thermal mess in the picture ?

Torx T20 Bit, three screws, take the two off that hold the swinging bracket.

Hang on... I'll post a pic:

Edit... two screws to remove, take off bracket retainer and replace screws...

Temps are great... I'm using Auto voltage now @ 4.6 Ghz. BEFORE, Core #1 was the hottest, now it's Core #2.

jesus that is a massive deviation in temps. I thought with delidding people were getting closer temps across the cores.

Your right... I suspect I have some more screwing to do, lol. Really though, I need to put more pressure on the CPU

Get some Coolabratory pro. I don't think AS5 is really that good for direct die.

To much pressure isn´t to good either...killed an Asus gene 2 With too much pressure bending the pins to far down resulting in a shortcut, melting sockets are fun :D

Is there anything stopping Intel from copying the approach new graphics cards use? Direct die without the worry of applying too much pressure.... lower temps, less paste... they could even cheap out more on their stock coolers doing that. Everybody would win.

Well they would BUT <-- BIG butt

They don´t, the is reason as i said Some person *coughs* may try to apply for what ever reason to much pressure those pins and sockets are not made for that, graphics cards are hard soldered to the PCB No pins makes it less fractional.

I think we will see Chips without IHS on the OEM Market when they soldered solutions will arrive.

it reminds me of ny old athlon xp with the bare die it made it very nerve racking putting a heatsink back on.

pretty much no desktop chips are sold without a IHS now due to the die getting cracked my noobs but all the laptop processors still come naked because they are installed by professionals.

What do pins have to do with this? If Intel were going bare die with a protective shim around it they'd just change the socket spec to raise the cpu up a few millimeters. They change sockets often enough so there's always the opportunity for that, like say with Haswell. Wouldn't even break cooler compatibility.

If you look at the first pic, the socket has a raised rectangle in the middle and bumps on the sides, preventing the pins from being crushed.

Now what disturbs me is the uneven core temps, though still in range... is there a map somewhere showing where the cores are phyiscally located on the die?

Edit: Found it (thanks to Bit-Tech)... must be the AS5 application.

Ok.. they way it was posted alludes to the fact that there is a problem with it being directly on the die. If its performance only, that post didnt lead me there, LOL!

+1... the differences are negligible really. A proper mount will make more of a difference than the TIM really... no idea what erocker was saying up there...

I'm saying there are better pastes out there. AS5 is old, requires curing time, can dry out, etc. etc. Plus, people are getting best results with CL Pro or ultra. Not saying AS5 won't work, that's ridiculous, there's just better.
