Promising 'revolutionary' graphics with a new game engine, what in fact has been delivered is a washed out mess, and early Tomb Raider graphics in certain areas.
Remember Lara Croft's triangular boobs? I bet you didn't think you'd see those in 2018, did you? Well, you can now, because we've got triangular rocks and water that resembles chicken soup, but not as tasty.
Yet again, a game is released that is either half finished, or compromised for consoles, then badly ported for PC and the result is like minestrone soup - a mish mash, as if was cobbled together in one mad rush, just to please the Square Enix (SE) shareholders.
Steam reviews are mostly negative and many have refunded. To some extent, this has made SE sit up and listen and they finally posted links and a thread for tech support, saying that our issues would be addressed, as if we are the ones with the problem at our end, when clearly they have screwed up.
My biggest issue is with the inability to remap keys, being forced to stick with WASD. This in itself is deal breaker, but I'm prepared to hang on until they fix it.
I don't know what they were thinking when they designed the water, the rocks and waterfalls. They definitely got stuck in the 90s on that one.
The menu UI is also a mess and doesn't function in the traditional sense, where you would hit ESC. Apply and back are buried in a sub menu and the whole experience is very frustrating.
The actual game is fun, with explosions galore and some new tricks for Rico, but it's hampered by terrible controls and having to use WASD for everything, even vehicles, for which I have always used the numpad arrows. That's not an option at the moment.
Anyway, at least they have acknowledged that there are issues that need addressing:

  • Improvements to menu navigation for mouse and keyboard users
  • Support for remapping of movement keys
  • Improved vegetation rendering and asset updates
  • Fixes to some texture mapping issues
  • Increased mouse sensitivity range
  • Corrected specialised vehicle support for mouse and keyboard players
  • Fixed issue with steering flying vehicles with keyboard
  • Numerous stability fixes
We are aware of many other issues being reported and are prioritising tasks as best we can so you will continue to see further updates.

I would normally refund a game in this condition, but with the peculiarities of Steam's local currency arrangement and Argentina's basket case economy, the Steam price worked out at around $17, so I grabbed it before they noticed their error.

Anyway, here are a few shots of triangles and soup.

I thought you were gonna say a mess of gameplay... because it seems to be that too (but in a good way).

Oh wow! Thank you for being the early adopter this time around! I surely hope they pay attention and fix this.

Thanks for the rundown!

I'm one of those arrow key people myself, that would drive me crazy.

whats with games now? Most are a mess in general and are not fun to play or are just shoddily developed.

I can explain. In the mid 00's corporations realized there is BIG BIG money in video games. So they all jumped in buying up all the smaller developers and forcing them into 80 hour work week. Some were paid well but the newbies were paid poop and very underqualified. As we got into the early 10s we saw more corporate buy up and many disgruntled workers. The coding was getting more sophisitcated and there was no longer a big talent pool to code. Not accidently we also saw the rise of the indie developer making actual great video games with high quality artwork and game play. Most of the great game devs realized they could go on their own and create their own games. So now we have awful AAA titles that promise all sorts of amazing experiences but almost always under-deliver. There are exceptions like Rockstar and CD Red but if you talk to anyone there they are treated well and the culture is far less corporate than EA and the rest. Video games are a form of art and meant to be fun so their creation does not mesh well with corporate bottom line ass hats. If games become shit less people will buy, especially as this generation grows up with mobile devices and then we can get back to solid AAA releases.

Thanks.

I just remember last time games were this shit was my days with NES and LJN games. Or pretty much most games minus the big titles (FF, Legend of Zelda, Mario, etc).

Hit and run tactics.
Code for consoles, wrap it for PC, release, only put out fires that you absolutely have to once you have their money. This is basically the recipe for every AAA game release that doesn't have a subscription or a microtransaction model.

If you read the Steam forums on JC4, you'll find quite a few sanctimonious individuals complaining about us complaining and quite naturally, being a Steam forum, Internet arguments ensue, with SE probably looking on with a sense of schadenfreude.
And yes, far too many games are released as betas, we test them, and they issue patches - if we shout loud enough.
However, on YouTube, there are far too many reviewers as apologists for this kind of behaviour, who either refuse to acknowledge the developers' shortcomings, or if they do, they tell us to hang on for a so called Day One Patch that never comes and to stop crying in to our beer.
Don't make me laugh.
Much of the problem is gamers accepting everything that's thrown at them without kicking up a stink.
On this occasion however, they have evidentally taken notice and only time will tell as to when and if they fix the game.
It's also worth noting that the Square Enix forums are completely devoid of any JC4 content. There's not even a tech thread.
Rant over, for now.

I don't follow reviewers that close. I just want good ol days of game demos tbh.

Not all change is good. Evidence are these issues.

I think market research shows demos hurt sales. Which is really just more evidence of corporate ass hats focusing on marketing hype than actual game play mechanics and artwork.

I think market research shows demos hurt sales. Which is really just more evidence of corporate ass hats focusing on marketing hype than actual game play mechanics and artwork.
15 years ago, I bought a lot of games based on the demos. Big example was 2003's Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3 Raven Shield. It had an amazing demo with 3 levels of complete multiplayer content. I played the demo a ton until the game was released.

Right, and that was actually a quality game. I bought it as well. When you make crap games you don't give out demos, you sell pre-releaseses so that people PAY to beta test.

Loved JC3. Seems like this game is a mess from a gameplay perspective with a lot of technical issues. Seems like it was rushed. Shortest time span between Just Cause releases probably caused this. Should have waited until next year.

This year has been bad for sequels. Shadow of the Tomb Raider - big let down. Far Cry 5 - big let down. Assassin's Creed Origins (technically last year) - moderate let down. Far Cry 3 and Tomb Raider 2013 were some of the best games I played. Seems like too many developers are rushing out sequels now.

Just like the movies. There is a total lack of creativity out there in the large corporations, both movies and games. Gee, what social movements have popped up in the past few years that seem to be repressing creativity????? Hrm??????????

Problem is, these guys aren't really the big bad. They're a relatively small studio. Or were for awhile. One of the few smaller devs that tried to push AAA (or near AAA) quality games. Punishing them won't punish the likes of EA or Activision or something. edit: My bad, these are published by Square.. but it still uses their in house stuff (Avalanche/Apex engines).
