Just when you think you've seen it all

Get a call from an older couple I know that their PC is not working (does not turn on) so I stop by to check it out. It's an older Athlon II X4 desktop from HP that I set up for their business. Over the years I've replaced the PC's PSU and HDD on separate occasions so I know it well.

I remove the side panel and hit the start button, CPU fans starts running like an old car's motor. Starts fast then slows down, then starts up again fast then slows down. The BIOS screen does not post. I shut down the PC and start it up again and it won't even turn on even though power is going to the mob (mobo light is on).

I notice a dried up liquid marks on the PSU, kind of like dried sap on wood board. I run my finger down the PSU and it's definitely a dried up liquid. I go to smell the liquid and I know it instantly...cat piss (we have a cat at home as well). Their damn cat pissed into the computer through the metal mesh port on the side panel...probably more then once...

Me too. It is not just to relieve themselves, but to mark their territory. You can only hope the cat got zapped in the process - like peeing on an electric fence.

The PSU works I hooked it up to another PC at home. Tonight I'll check the ram and CPU but I'm 90 percent sure the Mobo is toast.

PSU is actually top mounted so I believe it hit that first and then came down. It's an old Antec neo eco I had lying around that I replaced in there after the HP special died. Maybe Antec and Seasonic (the oem) can label their products "cat piss resistant"

Someone did it more than once and didn't get shocked... someone also watched mythbusters. Again, it can happen, but it is rare for the reason I listed.

Well, let us say that it's a question of how old you are, ie how tall you are, ie how close the source of the stream is to the wire, and how close to the electrical source you are, and also how badly you need to pee.

I grew up on a farm. Trust me.

I can second this, and we didn't even have farms nearby.

Protip: don't put your case on the floor. I do have it there but cat can never get past the wiring and its pretty close to the wall. SO block that rear entrance somehow if you do have to.

I had a subwoofer get 'marked' though. Broke down three weeks later

My cat always wants in the data closet, presumably because it's warm and reminds her of an egyptian pyramid (I'm convinced that is the ancient spacecraft the kitties used to travel to earth and make us petting slaves).
