Id say after checking out ur specs to stay with xp only because of ur 2 gig of ram.

I have 2 Gb of ram with Vista Ultimate 32, I get a 5,9 memory score in vista experience index.
Also I can alt-tab from intensive games (Mass Effect, Unreal tournament 3, Assassin's Creed)
to my browser with little to no waiting time.

Of course I use them in 1:1 with my fsb in dual-channel @ 4-4-4-12 2T

I dual-boot with XP and Vista. Originally I did this because I didn't really want to use Vista, but my job required that I have it installed. I installed it about a month ago, and while I had some issues setting it up, I actually like it and haven't booted into my XP install in about 2 weeks. I say go with Vista.

I am in the exact same situation and I fully agree. My only problem with vista (since sp1) is my Aetheros USB WiFi, but that one has problems on XP as well :)

I was so not into Vista till 2 months ago. Tried it once every 6 months to check for improvements. I am happy to say it's finnaly viable.

my second system has 2GB of ram and it too runs vista just fine.

Vista uses maybe 200-300MB more ram than XP at most (thats with all the bells and whistles on, sidebars, UAC, dreamscene, etc) - its merely enough that combined with 1GB of ram and modern games, it lags out. 2GB of ram is definately enough for vista - 4GB is just so cheap that its hard to not reccomend it these days.

I disabled sidebar, UAC, and indexing service as they provide nothing useful for me. Dreamscape is nice but utterly useless, didnt download/install it on my keeper vista.
Then again I disabled indexing, and tweaked my XP install every time.. so no change there.:)

Overal Vista and it's 3rd party drivers have matured quite nicely. It's a keeper for me now, dual boot of course because after 7 years with XP it's like getting rid an old friend. And I do play some old games that may or may not work in Vista, that would be the main reason.

Edit: Also if you're concerned about Aero, dont worry, it's managed by your video card. No fps impact in games whatsoever.
