Hello Folks,

I am the happy owner of an Azio MGK/RGB-1, an extremely well built, and beautiful looking KB. Today I decided to clean it thoroughly, and obviously I needed to remove the keys to do so, I used the included Azio Key Cap Puller (KCP forward) and after reassembling the KB, i noticed that the keys had scratches on them from the KCP :(. I have contacted Azio regarding the matter, and am awaiting response, but I thought I would ask if anyone else has had this happen to them? Am i being ridiculous expecting my keys to NOT be scratched from the KCP?? I would assume it would be made of a softer material, or at most the same material as the keys themselves. Or ,is this just part of the deal, and Should I STFU?

what do You think (if you have encountered this, or not)

Thanks & Regard's

& then some pics of it for F's sake.

Well, if you had use a no-name keycap puller on this KB, I would have said 'deal with it'.

But this, this is a same brand keycap puller on same brand keycaps. You are entitled to replacements. Even if just for common courtesy. Its a bad design on their part really, the keycaps are probably a softer material and the puller caused friction.

i agree. atleast that scratching shouldnt occur on a $150+ KB. I spoke with one of the Azio Engineers, and he told me that they paint the keys on this particular KB, and that might be why the scratching is happening. I asked if they stock Key caps, and he said they do, but as he was not a support member, he wasnt sure how to go about dealing with my concern. Im awaiting response from the email He had me send him, which he forwarded to Tech support.

I hate those plastic key cap pullers. Get a proper wire one.

But, yes they should replace the keycaps on your keyboard since the puller they included damaged the keys.

Cheap pullers are cheap..... that combined with painted keycaps is a huge no-no!

this is what I use on all reviewed boards, as it is known that plastic on plastic tends to mar the surface. Even on some double-shot caps, it will leave marks. The wire cap pullers go under the caps, and does not cause any damage ;)

Youd think the included cap puller wouldnt scratch.

I guess you had the puller in correct orientation?

I was so p!$$ed off. The one that I used does pull from the bottom ,but you have to push it down over the key cap which is where it does the scratching. I'll have to order one of those types you linked.

luckily their support is really good. The last time I had an issue with the same type of keyboard they just sent me a whole brand new one because of one sticky :)

guess you had the puller in correct orientation?

Yeah i used it right. It's just the way that type of kcp works ,is you push it down over the key cap and since it's arms are slightly closer together than the width of one key It rubs against both sides which is where the scratching occurred.

It was this type

Pretty much any key cap puller sent with keyboards (plastic pullers) will scratch keycaps! Happened on many boards, many manufacturers! I would hazard to guess there are soft cap pullers out here, but most I have seen and used did damage in some form. The nice thing about wire pullers is they are there and used because issues are abound with plastic pullers. They are round on all edges, and if they do any damage, it would be under the cap, and not visible.

@jboydgolfer I should have worded that better. I know plastic KCP's latch under the caps, but it is the sliding down and back up the sides that does the damage. With the wire pullers, you can see in the above statement why I prefer them.

Were there any instructions and precautions with the KCP? It seems to me, since it was provided by and [apparently] made for that keyboard, if you used it correctly, it should not have scratched the keys.

That said, I agree, the wire ones are better just because you can slip the wires under the keys without scratching (the sides anyway). If yours looks like these plastic pullers, yeah, they scratch as noted in the video.

"Should" is the key word in that assumption. Many reviewers will say in the reviews if the puller caused damage, and in my experience, more will cause damage then those that do not!

no mention of possible scratching, but basedo nwhat others have posted, it seems i should have known.

i even took the extra precaution (before i knew it was scratching the caps) to slide the caps horizontally out of the KCP, instead of oulling them out the opposite way they went in. as long as Azio replaces them , im cool with it, ill be grumpy if they try and charge me though./

Just buff it out. It should be a double shot molding so its not like the color will come off. The scratch is on the side? How deep?

Lets see a pic

it seems i should have known

Maybe not. I am basing it off the fact that I have seen quite a few keyboards and just about every puller on the market. Anyone who follows mechanical keyboards with some passion has read about crap pullers, damage to caps that are "lower-grade", and how to get around it. Sorry for coming off so blunt originally, but after years of doing this I sort of forget that not everyone is as versed as I am on the topic.

@Jetster Most of the mainstream caps are shot white/opaque, and are then painted black on top of the plastic. Buffing them would make the situation more obvious.

Those are the caps from my MGK1, and they are definitely painted.

Consider yourself lucky, as the majority of your caps are painted as well.

its a shame too, they are ABS plastic, they painted them i suppose for a nice aesthetic/ i dunno. you'd hope that with a KB that sells for More than $100, you'd get a nice KCP....happy i got mine when Azio was new in the KB market, cost me less than $80 ;) ...i saw them on Newegg for over $170 once:rolleyes:

To be blunt, at any cost, I have not seen a KCP I would say is "good!"

A few years back I ran across the wire puller after WASD sent me a set of solid dyed key caps for a review.

If Azio bones you on the deal, while not cheap, it may be time to look at custom sets;)

If my keycaps looked like that I would do the same as @sneekypeet suggested and just get a WASD keycap set.

they are way better and get a proper doubleshot set while you're at it... you will not regret it.

I'm going to quietly sneak out of this thread :p as I just grab any old thing that will get underneath and pop them straight out, it's fun trying to guess which way they will go or where they will end up.... :D but I can say I have never been concerned with scratching them, that said I'm not one to spend $100+ on a keyboard either so maybe I might be a bit more anal about it if I did or if I looked at them that closely? reminds me, I spilt a drink a few days ago and my 1/! is stuck hard even though I've tried my usual press it 20 times in a row really fast to unstick it

Edit: Like an idiot didnt click the spoiler tag pics and yea, I would definately look to get a replacement set of caps if an included tool did that to mine as well as that is not just the odd scratch here or there, I'll stick to prying them up from underneath and watching them fly off.

I've already got the torch I just need to get a pitchfork and I had towards Azio's front door

I'll make sure to update when I get an answer from them if anyone's interested in the outcome

How old is the KB? as a company a spare set of caps would cost nothing in the scheme of things as they would likely retain you as a customer in the future and you would be more obliged to reccomend them to others because of the service you recieved.

My Corsair, and GSkill are both double shot cast and backlit

"Double Shot Keycaps. Unlike printing, this keycap type is produced when two layers of plastic are molded into each other. No printing necessary. The end result is a key legend which will never fade or chip off. ABS keys will develop a shine over time; but PBT and POM keys will retain their texture even after heavy use."
