hey... i found while decompressing a file of 64kb(originally 640mb) that it requires 16 hours to decompress... i have 2gb ram installed on my processor "genuine inter(R) CPU T2300@1.66GHz 1.67GHz". is it usually take such a long time?

Unless there's no data in that 640 MB, there's no way it could compress to 64 KB. My guess is that the 64 KB file is corrupt and can't be inflated. It is stuck in an infinite loop.
Assuming the file is fine, an extra 2 GiB of RAM wouldn't hurt. If it is using virtual memory to decompress it, it will be extremely slow.

This. Nothing can change the nature of compression, so unless you're mostly compressing the same data (repetitive zeros or ones,) you're not going to even compress that much data into a file that small. It's computationally impossible unless the conditions are just right, which I doubt they would have been if the file was 640MB big and was something other than an empty disk image.
I don't see how the file type makes a difference. I don't think you're right here.

Yes! I highly recommend using 7zip. It supports most widely used compression formats such as zip and rar as well as it's own 7z format which can use LZMA2. At work I do weekly backups and I compress almost 900GB to ~450GB using 7z and LZMA2. I highly recommend it, but it can be pretty heavy on the CPU and memory.

That's only 50% compression ratio. PAQ frequently gets less than 33%.

That depends on the files being compressed. That's also not maximum compression because it would take too long to compress... until I upgrade that server from one 2Ghz quad to dual 3Ghz quads.
well i got the file from this site, they provide many such files which rare decompressed to such a imaginable small extent. So should i believe that the file is corrupted.

Wouldn't trust it, no way you could compress the sort of files GTA san andreas uses to that size

Just give Rockstar your money and buy it from Amazon or Steam for cheap. The GTA games (GTA1 and 2 are free to download) are worth the money.
