Just curious who is the king of the 30" gaming monitors. I am in the market for one ...

Is the dell ultrasharp still king?

If not ... who should I be looking at now?

Pretty sure it is the Dell Ultrasharp. Personally though I find my Yamakasi Catleap to be better then the Dell's in color reproduction. I owned the Dell U3011 once upon time, returned it for a refund, wasn't impressed at all by it.

I own one of the original 30" dell IPS monitors.
I paid a lot for it. I love it. It's awesome.
They are stupidly overpriced.

I would just get a Korean 2560x1440 monitor, especially if you can make it so that there is not too much glare in your room

I second a 27" Korean monitor like the Yamakasi Catleap. If it wasn't good and amazingly cheap, there wouldn't be a 500 post thread about that monitor on TPU. 27" is big enough anyway, and will give you increased PPI versus the 30" models. :D

I heard that the ZR series from HP are decent UltraSharp alternatives. If the Samsung is a 1920x1200 model, then the extra working space of the 2560x1440 res will make a nice difference.

The Korean monitors seem to be alright, but after giving them a real hard look and reading the threads here and over at OCN- their quality unit to unit is highly inconsistent. Add to that the lack of easily accessible warranty support and I think it is better to pick up the Dell on sale unless you really, really cant afford the premium.

If you buy from the right seller and with a zero dead pixel policy, you'll probably get a great monitor. He could even buy a good calibrator and still have a lot of $$ left over

Unless you find the 27" lacking in size, why go 30"?

I have owned an ultrasharp for about 3 years now, I bought it used and I would rob a bank with a sharpened stick in the small hope that I would get away with it just to buy one if this one should ever suddenly die! I'm an avid gamer and I tell you that gaming at 2560 x 1600 is a dream. I have seen games like BF3 and Skyrim and Wargame on other 24 -27" monitors and they pale in comparison to this monitor IMO. Even if they are over priced they are worth it to me. Not to mention DELL has a pretty awesome warranty with these things. The guy I bought it from just transfered the warranty over to me just like that for the remaining year. Not to mention watching HD movies. Anyhoo, you will not be dissapointed, just make sure you have at least a 5870ish type card at minimum to play games cranked on this baby. My 5870 is doing a pretty good job for the most part, but it is a minimum for newer games.

I wasn't questioning the upgrade as 1080/1200p to 1440/1600p is a pretty good reason lol

There is such a thing as a monitor too big, especially if the viewing distance is fixed to a certain maximum (ie: desk). If you liked the 27" size, I'd say that you probably won't miss the extra 3 inches of a 30". Still, having a huge 30" monitor can be nice

lol too big was my 42" tv I had hooked up for awhile :)

I sit about 2-3 feet or so away from the screen so I think 30" would not be too big for being too close to it ... what ya think?

The issues I have read about extend beyond the multitude of dead pixel claims and physical damage (nicks, bends, scratches, etc) on the screen. For example, some people have mentioned a yellow shift in whites on the bottom half of the screen- that's a deal breaker.

Remember that for gaming the standards are lower than the usual customer for high res S-IPS panels

I don't know to what extend the yellow shift is, but if you calibrate it so that the center is perfectly calibrated, the yellow shift is cut in half, and probably not noticeable. Also, lemons happen with every product. The biggest problem about the Korean monitors is the lack of local warranty. But really, at worst you have to spend an extra 100$ for the RMA, and the chances of you getting a second dud is pretty small. Or you could sell the monitor in the US, noting the specific problem and break even or make a profit even

I really do not want to have to pay a decent amount of money and worry about yellowing or anything. I doubt I would pay $50 for a monitor with yellowing issues ....

mine doesn't have it and I don't think many people have that issue. I've only heard of 1 instance.

A Korean monitor is about 350$, not over 1000$ btw

Not necessarily, as i found out the hard way: i had to pay an extra 139.75€ worth of customs charges.

My monitor cost me 424.52€ = $558.33: still a heck of allot cheaper then $1000.

The shippers know how to make sure that you don't get dinged by customs in the USA, especially since the US is a big market. Some sellers also do this for secific countries, ie: Canada.

For European countries, the customs are different and idk if there is a way to circumvent being charged, but your shipper probably didn't know the details so he didn't do anything special to circumvent it
