The Kingston A1000 is a cost-effective NVMe x2 drive priced at just $150 for the 480 GB variant. Using two PCI-Express lanes keeps cost down due to a cheaper controller and simpler PCB design. This makes the A1000 barely more expensive than a SATA SSD and has it offer higher performance.

Thanks for the review!

I still question the need for a PCIe x2 interface M.2.

In real world applications is it really going to be any [noticeably] faster than a regular old SATA SSD like the Samsung 860 EVO 500GB, which is $25 cheaper and stays cool as a cucumber?

Just seemed to me like the whole point of getting a M.2 NVMe drive - was for the speed. The PCIe x4 speed. Just MHO though.

This would save some power in notebooks, so it has a market if you want something power efficient, but with better performance than a SATA drive.

Oh that's a good point, turning off two lanes should reduce power slightly, I doubt it's a lot though

Pity the capacity on these models tops out at 480GB. Where I live, they're actually cheaper than SATA M.2 drives.

There is a 960 GB model

Yeah I just realized I'm stupid, and actually talking about the 2.5" A400. If you Google "Kingston A400 1tb" the first result that comes up states "120GB-480GB" so I didn't click any further, but going to the actual page states 960GB:

W1z, is an SX8200 drive review planned? the 480GB one can go for as low as 130 euros. The world needs to know...

Don't think that Toshiba/WD's 3D TLC NAND is built on a 15nm node, quoting from an interview last year with WD : "He said 15nm 2D NAND was "extremely aggressive” lithography. "But when you go to 3D NAND, the pitches are pretty relaxed," he said. "It's not quite as aggressive as the 15nm.” "
They haven't said what specific lithography that their 3D NAND is built on though.

Price seems reasonable plus they'd be excellent for raid-0. Good middle ground alternative to the Samsung EVO 970's. For about $100's you'd have about the same performance except double the capacity not to shabby perhaps if you wanted to idk throw on your entire steam library on it for example.
