Konami Charges $10 for a Second Save Slot in Metal Gear Survive

Metal Gear Survive like many other games requires the player to create a character in order to start the single-player campaign or play online. Everything is fine up to this point. However, only the first save slot in Metal Gear Survive is free as consequent save slots will cost a small fee. For example, players who want to do a second playthrough and keep their existing character will have to pay Konami for a second save slot. Each new save slot costs 1000 Survival coins. Therefore, players will have to spend at least $10 to buy 1150 Survival coins to purchase a save slot. The concept certainly isn't new as many online multiplayer games charge players for creating a second character. It's somewhat justifiable since you're technically paying for additional storage on their servers. But in Konami's case, it's just outright wrong to charge players for storing an extra save file on their own hard drive or SSD.

This is disgusting and should be criticized all over the place. What's next, buy a 60€ game and when you install it, it says "To press start, please pay 10€ first". It's insane and gamers should kick Konami in the balls hard. Repeatedly. Till they remove this bullshit. It's so infuriating how companies keep on expanding their neverending greed instead of making excellent games for which gamers would crave and want even at higher prices. Because if you make outstanding game, people often decide to reward developers. If they play it dirty, gamers often look for cheaper ways. Say hello to piracy and grey market. Which is gonna be?

Wow. I didn't even know it was a thing to charge for additional saves. This kind of micro-transaction never even crossed my mind as a thing I would have to worry about as a gamer.

Let me teach you about the moon. Nasa says they lost the technology to go back to the moon. They now claim we can't leave low earth orbit.

Also, I didn't come from a fucking ape.

To get around this you should only have to backup your save files then delete them and have the game recreate them. I've done this with a lot of games. Just zip up your current save files and name the zip file what ever name. Then start up the game and it will create a new player. Once the new player has been created go back an zip of those save files and just swap when you have to, but just remember to zip those files after your last play session. It's a hassle but it's doable. :toast:

I get what the article's saying that you're using their space for storage, but how big is a save file, 1k? C'mon...that seems to be taking advantage of non-technical players that don't realize how small save files are. I get that F2P games have done it for years though and those games have charged similar amounts for slots (War of Tanks for example).

It's still surprising that they'd take this angle though with Konami being on top of basically every gamer's bad list already from the Kojima debacle.

Yeah, well, wake up when companies pull crap like this and customers don't jump all over it. Because we all know if users weren't going for these, companies wouldn't do it to begin with.

Hmm... define rich. I spend $300-400 every year when I buy all of the games on my steam wishlist during black friday. Sure, that aggregates to thousands after >6 years, but I certainly wouldn't define myself as worse off.

One must have entertainment in their life and you will pay for it one way or another.

Well, kind of the whole point of the article we're discussing here is games aren't all about the upfront cost anymore. I mean even "free" mobile games come with paid-only unlockables that will set you back 4-5 AAA PC titles or with an endless supplies of consumables that you also get to pay for...

Back in my day, you had one save slot and one save slot only, and you liked it!

J/k, even Zelda on the NES had 3 save slots...this is just BS.

Well, there is add-in value and then there is greed. I don't have a problem paying for many DLCs. This usually comes down to how much content at what cost. A great example of people bitching about DLCs is with Crusader Kings 2. I don't have a problem with it. I evaluate each of the DLCs and decide whether or not to buy. However, a great part of the community wants to whine as if the work put in to make the content should be free.

Concerning this article and subject. I think that what Konami is doing here is ridiculous and would certainly gripe along with everyone else about it. It took 1 person about 5 minutes of coding and they charge $10 x thousands of customers. That's what the bottom line boils down to. Unadulterated greed.

Paying extra money to use some HDD/SDD capacity I already own...so NOT okay with that.

I think their intent is to make people with multiple users on one copy of the game to pay to allow more than one user. 99% of games I play, I only use one slot but I also only have one user so it's not a problem.

Well, yes, this is testing new lows.
But while you and I are mature enough when it comes to buying our games, we both now these aren't aimed at us, but at the teens that come home crying for a game because everybody else in their classroom already has it. That's the ugly part of mtxs, dlc and rehashes in general :(
