There was countless times I hit the reset button by mistake back in the day (usually it wasn't recessed). I never found it more than an annoyance, considering you can just do the same thing by holding the power button down for a while. Guess it's faster?

I made good use of my reset switch recently with the increasing frequency of complete system freezes in Kingdom Come: Deliverance before I found out that the game doesn't like running in fullscreen mode with saves at later stages of the game. It's been fine in borderless window mode since, but it took me a while to find out.

Can't remember the last time i had to use reset. My PC is just so stable, i very very rarely get crashes.

I've noticed a lot of premium modern cases sold no longer have a reset switch. I think this is a shame. I was messing around with a couple bootable usb applications today (clonezilla, seatools, parted magic) to test drive health and clone operation and it is a major nuisance to lack the reset button. For example, my new O11 Air Mini lacks this button. I purchased a PCI slot mounted power/reset to solve this issue, but I still felt compelled to comment about this shortcoming.
Guessing since Windows is nowadays much more stable than back in the day, reset button isn't really necessary for many people.

At my system i can press the On/Off button for 5 seconds to shut down the system hardly. After i press the button a second time to get it running again. So in this way i don't need a reset switch. I'm using a Lian Li O11D Rog right now. Sometimes i press the reset accidentially as i try to stick in an USB cable. The reset button is straight up of the USB ports. I don'tt need the switch at all. Even when programming and running on an endless loop.

I used my reset switch as a clear cmos button for a couple of years. Now my new board has buttons on the back, my reset switch goes back to being unused.

Modern case design has regressed in my opinion, it seemed to peak with the fractal define R5.

I am using an R4 for my main rig which I expect I will use for life unless it breaks.
I came close to buying an R5 for my AMD rig during covid but like others I had to deal with financial uncertainty so waited until things were more stable for me, but by then the product was retired and the R6 is a shadow of the R4/R5.

R5's are still out there just at inflated prices and will buy one for my AMD rig still very soon, and just learning a lesson to not hesitate in the modern world on tech purchases.

The only issue for me is not having a front usb-c port on these older cases.

New cases just seem like large empty shells with lack of drive bays, and the reset button removal I just find totally bizarre as the prices are way more than a decade ago yet they feel a need to save a dollar on a reset button.

R5 unlike R4 has a removable door, a flaw in the R4, logically I would give my main rig the R5, but I am not rebuilding it for that.

Never seen a reset button that can press by mistake, and you must have a very strange case if holding the power button down does the same thing as a reset button.

On (albeit very old cases) it was mostly
Power Button
Small reset button (like a button sticking out)
USB

More than once I pressed reset with a USB lmao

Not exactly the same! But I don't think it's too much of a difference, just hold down, wait for shutdown, press again.

Soft reset made sense to me back when I had HDDs hooked up. Not so much since I migrated all my online drives to flash. Even less so after moving to Linux. SysRq REISUB FTW! :rockout:

Never seen a reset button that can press by mistake,
My 780T had case fan control as a button that is similar in shape and size to the reset button. Only happened twice, but I did mistake one for the other before.
Also did mistakenly press it a couple of times trying to plug in a USB cable.

I guess poor designs will always exist :)

The way I see it, if one is concerned about accidental presses and what not, just dont connect the reset cable to the board, whilst those who want one its still there for them to use, everyone is a winner. I prefer to not put my hardware through a full power cycle.

We had the i/o led removed a long time ago (my case has a DIY led for it), I think next there will be a case manufacturer removing the power button, then everyone else will latch on to it, reviewers will ignore or play it down and it will be the new industry standard. Everyone will be like "its fine just use the PSU power switch".

Excuses made up for lack of features/performance. That's what we see all across the PC industry these days, unfortunately.

Reinvent the wheel? This industry changes daily. Hard drives don't freeze any longer, no need for a reset switch. And if you hold the pwr button down guess what? reset

"Most modern PC cases do not have a reset button switch because it's simply unpractical. The power button provides a restart function and a shut down function already."

Some changes are good. Some are not. Getting rid of the reset switch is not, imo.

Funny. A UK-Guy talks about reinventing. I only need to think about the position of a steering wheel at a car. About the BrExit,... I really can't figure out, where a british reinvention was a good idea. [ironic off]

Funny. A UK-Guy talks about reinventing. I only need to think about the position of a steering wheel at a car. About the BrExit,... I really can't figure out, where a british reinvention was a good idea. [ironic off]

I think britain should have switched to the right side not the left. I guess now though it would cost too much to do it.

The steering wheel position is sourced in the middle age. At tournaments the UK-knights did hold the lance at the wrong side. And nobody told them how it works correctly. All over the world everybody was too stupid to realize. Only a few british knights where intelligent enough to reinvent it. ;)

It was originally to do with chariot drivers not whipping oncoming chariots horses
