What will the performance be like with a mobile HD 3450?

I'm trying to switch out my desktop for a laptop from HP which seems to have the cheapest for performance laptops currently... (looking for a dual core with discrete graphics... cheapest dell was 999 while the HP I'm looking at is under 700)

I am currently running an Intel E2200 @ 3 GHZ and a 9600 GT (Stock Clocks)

ya laptop graphics are usually a couple levels behind in performance already (i.e. my old ATI x1400 mobile performed more like an x700), so if you are comparing a lower model designation of a mobile gpu it won't even come close to a higher model of a desktop version.

i'm sure the 3450 mobile would run most things, but not well.

It should, the source engine games don't take a whole lot to run. Heck, I ran Half Life 2 on a crappy FX5900 back in the day.

It should play original source (exluding the orange box updated engine) games on high just fine.

Check the laptop suggested by zithe in the above quote. It's very good.

you are a god... to think I was willing to wait a week just for HP to build a laptop when this is much better for a similar price!

crazy specifications! 4GB ram! 250GB HDD! 8600M GT! holy bejesus...

You nees to thank Zithe. Click on the blue button in the quote and it will take you to his post.
Those are some crazy specs and 8600 is comparable to 9600.

yeah, excpet for one problem: The 8000 series nvidia's for laptops
are defective. here's a big argument about it on the everex forums:

http://www.everexforum.com/forum/index.php?a=topic&t=8143

especially the last post on the first page by evilwizardglick,
and the 4th post by Jasmine on the 2nd page which gives
other proof of it. Interesting discussion, involving every laptop
that uses nvidia, not just everex.

I was hoping to get a nice inexpensive HP, but now I'm going to save
for an asus with a really good warranty and an ATI mobility radeon
3650.

when you're trying to really get something done, having hardware
failures is really bad.

It's not included in any list of possibly defective laptops. I searched : "ZT Element S1017i-15 Defective"

I do a lot of research. I don't want to be hated for suggesting bad stuff. ;)

That wouldn't do it. A search on the graphics card would be the effective thing to
do:
