laptop hdd's keep dying from heat?

I built a new desktop with a laptop huddle. The case does get pretty hot. You can feel the heat when touching the case. Question here is I've gone through 2 laptop hdd's. They run fine then about a few days later each have died with clicking noise. But the desktop hdd in it is fine. Do laptop hdd have a low heat resistance or something?

Hitachi actually. Got them out two older hp laptops. Was trying to use them for security recordings in bosses store.

I run a WD2500BEKT for system backup (cause it was laying around) and not had a problem with it.
Been chugging along in a couple of systems for two to three years.
And Hitachi drives are pretty decent in the two or three I have installed in ( or come with ) a few laptops I have had.

Alot of notebook/laptop drives are, supposedly, designed with a greater tolerance for shock and heat as a condition of the environment they are expected to operate in.

What temps are you talking about?

Most notebook/laptop HDDs are rated for about 0 to 60 centigrade, except for a few specialized drives.

Personally, I wouldn't want to run them at the maximum limit for extended periods of continual use.

Tempwise irk but it gets up to 80F ambient sometimes and the case is quite warm to touch so I'd guess around 120F. But that's just an estimate.

Thats warm, but not warm enough to kill most laptop hard drives. It's very possible that both drives were failing in the first place. If the drives are at least still detected I would see what SMART has to say. If the drives are not detected, I would be more inclined to believe that it was luck of the draw. HDDs have one of the highest failure rates of any component in a computer so it's not unrealistic to have two drives fail in a row.

You said you took these out of an HP? How old are these drives and how many hours have they been running?

How long were you running them recording video?
If they where writing 24/7 for extended periods... the may have just given up the ghost, especially if your temps estimate is on the low side.

Just my opinion... I would get and use some drives that have a long warranty period, so if they do die in a harsh environment you may be able to get them replaced.

Old drives + laptop case + stress from recording that's a perfect scenario for drive failure.
I'd go for an external USB drive as a target for recording.

Also shocks and jerks inevitable with laptops can kill the HDDs.

For the info, I am running a WD5000BPVT on my laptop without issues for the last 1 year.

I gave up on mechanical HDDs for laptops as they are always the first thing to fail. I imagine, that as they were both used that they had been through some abuse.

the first one was probably 5-6years old, the second about the same, and i just took them out of the laptops. Got the laptops from my gf sister and one from my boss. So good possibility that they were dropped several times for both. I hope it isn't the sata controller killing them. the desktop i got the mobo from is from 2004. hell i never even thought that maybe it has a limit on the SATA HDD drive size.
