So, I have an old HP Pavillion G7 AMD A6, with dreadfully slow internet speed. Of course I'm spoiled as I have a giga connection.
I don't really use the laptop enough to justify buying a new one, not to mention the fact that my retirement income does not allow for frivolous spending...

So, I see things like this and wonder if this might be a simple and effective solution that won't break the bank, or is there some reason that I can't see that would prevent this from working...?? Thanks.

I have a powerline range extender so wireless not a big issue. What I'm hoping is possible is to bypass the crappy network adapter built into the laptop and use something like the one above or similar.

My understanding, such as it is, that a device like this could work, but my understanding could be way off...

100 MBps is real slow.... (12.5MB/s)

Does your laptop have an USB 3.0 port?

Alas, no.
The one you linked should work but 100mbps is slowww when you have 1gbps.......

Probably not any faster then the built-in wireless/ or network port.

Assuming you talk about Mbps and not MB/s.

Since you have a USB 3.0 port you could get this one if you want wireless

Otherwise get this one if you want wired

Also keep in mind, since you mentioned it's an old laptop the other hardware components probably aren't that fast either for todays standards.

So, I got the device and tested it, some improvement but less than I was hoping for...

I did a winsat test via commend prompt and got a score of 85 read 26 write from a 32g kinston 3.0 usb drive.
Not sure if that's good or not.

Here's a puzzler....
Connected directly to the cable modem...

Where did you plug the other end, a toaster?

What is the router? And service provider, too. Find their dedicated speed test and use that for starters. That way, you will get other network's (potential) issues out of the way.

Using a VPN?

That's better. What changed? I would *edit* NOT worry about the slight dip. Anything above 900 looks good

Try the adapter in the desktop. Obv.unplug desktop's current connection. Use same cable as laptop was using.

Excellent idea...

Well crap on a cracker. I guess it's not the adapter after all...
Using the adapter and regular line unplugged on the desktop...

Check the drivers for usb3 interface

Return the adapter or keep it just in case. Crack open the laptop to see if the wifi nic is easily accessible. Upgrading that will be your only option for greater speeds. When you get the info from the card, post it up. Also note how many antenna cables are attached.
