For that price, he could have a high-end gaming PC.

For a start that CPU is underpowered, and the graphics card is obsolete. The screen res/size is also awful.

Tell her to return it and have you build him a PC if you're confident enough to do that

hmm. I like the i7 mobiles, so that's good, but it seems expensive for what he's getting. I personally have this

I'm very happy with it. the only thing I can say (and I bet he'll say this too for his) battery life is a joke.

so to answer your question, he will probably be happy with it, but there are better for cheaper out there. (although I don't know what the one I linked would cost local)

@ red machine- the cpu is actually ok. (obviously not the same as a desktop quad) I run a 720qm, and I have zero issues running whatever game I want. (although the 5870 mobile could use a twin).

The laptop she bough has a better GPU in it. But it's still crap.

Just get him a PC. You'll get more for your money and have the option to upgrade later.

The only thing lower about them is the CPU,the GPU in those are much better than the 350m GT.

Never get a kid something portable that is expensive. When my sister was visiting she got her daughter a $150ish digital camera which the daughter lost on the flight home...

Losing a laptop is a bit harder, but I can easily see someone stealing it from him. +1 for the desktop. If the mother keeps the laptop with her rather then let the kid run around with it then it would probably be fine.
