What is it sitting on? Have you blown out your fan?

I have it on a cheap cooling pad, so it should be cooler than normal. My laptop fan is still working, i can really hear it ramp up when the temps gets higher, its usually pretty silent.

Hearing the fan run doesnt mean there is actually air moving. Most of the times a overheating laptop is caused by the airway being blocked(usually by a mesh of hairs and dust).
You should try to blow into the air vent at the side of your laptop. If you blow with your mouth it is safe to blow as hard as you can, just make sure to close your eyes, or you'll have them full if dust:D.
You can also try to put a vaccuum cleaner to the airvent at the bottom of the laptop on a lower setting.
If this all doesn't help you're going to have to open up your laptop(but that isn't needed in 90% or the times).

Good luck!

I agree! If you can (and don't feel bad doing this, don't do it if your worried about braking stuff,) get yourself a tube of arctic silver 5, open the laptop and unbolt the cooler from your CPU (and GPU if it's a shared heat sink, like my Dell Studio 1735, grrrr,) and clean out your heatsink and fan and clean off all of the old (and most likely hardened,) thermal compound and use some new stuff.

My warning is make sure you don't tighten the bolts that hold the cooler to the board too much or you will actually break the bolt (I made this mistake with my laptop, I haven't stopped kicking myself, because now my cpu cooler is held on with 2 of 3 bolt, yes, dell uses 3 mounting bolts which is so stupid imho,) and regardless that the mount is partially broken, I saw my temps drop by 15*C under load.

Fortunately since, my job provided a 13" MBP and I have a SB-E for games, so I actually almost never use my studio anymore (my wife uses it for browsing the internet,) but it sounds like an airflow/heat conduction issue.

My only question would be: "Does the bottom of your laptop get extremely hot under load? Almost scalding to the touch and if you have a plastic chassis, can you smell plastic when it gets loaded?"

you can also try setting an FPS cap for your games (about 60, or 45 even) or turning on vsync. You might have to lower settings in batman a bit so the gpu/cpu isn't having to work so hard.

dust/hair is a big enemy of computers, along with heat of course. a can of compressed air should help. Applying new thermal paste would definitely help too, if you can. Some PC shops will do it for you.

might also want to check dust levels on the cooling pad too.

The month in which I got the laptop, I was playing Starcraft II on as high settings as I could. Using hwmonitor I had similar temperatures as now. But honestly I pushed it out of my mind until now. The extremely high temps isn't good, definitely. So if presently under load, I receive similar temps as I did when I first got it, I dont think the airflow is being blocked that badly. Even if it was, I'd see at best a few drops in degrees, which is still in the danger zone.

The only things I can think of that would drastically reduce the temps right now is applying a new thermal compound, but I wanted to see if there was some other method first.

Turn Vsync on in Starcraft II, play a while, and check max temps. Then turn off Vsync and see if there is a difference.

If its been running hot when you first had it, then it could be the hardware is working really hard to run the games you want. In that case, all you can do is either lower settings, force fan speed to max, or change thermal compound... or all.

I don't VSYNC will really help? My fps never reaches past 60 so, don't see it being very useful.
And so far, I have not found a way to control the fan speed, although if someone has more info about this, I'd be grateful. I agree with the part on the thermal compound, although I'm very reluctant to open it, just cause it's still under warranty, I may do it once the warrant is over though.

Forget about fps limit/vsync nonsense.
It may be a way of getting around the problem (temporarily), but is not the cure.

First of all, check specs for maximum temps your hardware can take.
A quick google returned that your I5 520m can take up to 105deg. So you're not there yet (but close)
I think (to be confirmed) that your GPU is also fine at this high temp.

Bottomline:
Laptops run hot. No question about that.
Check your specs. If you're running close or exceeding max temp, you may want to check air tracts in your laptop and blow compressed air / clean them.

Cheers,

Cheers,

100*C is really high for even a laptop CPU. It's recommended that you don't get within 20*C of your tjmax, so he is running extremely hot by those standards. My laptop has a 2.3Ghz Core 2 Duo Penryn. It's tjmax is 85*c and it doesn't typically go above 60*C full load. I would clean it out and make sure its not clogged up.

It is never a good idea to run a CPU that hot, mobile or otherwise.

I don't think cleaning out the little bit of dust will help lower it below the safe levels, for reasons stated above, is there another solution in which i have missed??

I've thought about that, and since this is my school laptop, I have many important projects/files/programs/settings already installed on here, and would really like to avoid this if utterly possible.

If you're thinking that you might send it back in, don't break any stickers that say "void if broken" on them, but re-seating the cpu heat sink with some new thermal grease might help, but first think is first, clean out the heat sync if there is dust in it.

Bottom line is, it is defective, you can try and fix it yourself eg can o' air or opening it up. OR send it back. Can o' air sounds good if there are warranty stickers, dont fuck with those or you'll have to pay for the repair :toast:
good luck in whichever you deciede :rockout:

My Toshiba laptop with an AMD Phenom II quad-core X920 @ 2.1GHz/0.95v and HD 5650 @ 500MHz never exceeds 75 degrees Celsius, and it has nothing special as far as cooling is concerned. I'd say your laptop is defective if it did this out of the box.

Alright, so I cleaned out the dust as best as I could of, and reseated the laptop so its sitting directly above the fan on the cooling pad as well as cleaned off the dust on the cooling pad and the surrounding area. Currently the max temp I have seen from playing arkham city or starcraft 2 has been 88C on CPU, a good sign!

Yep, 88C is still too hot, sadly.

It might be the thermal paste gone bad. Try to apply a new one than you should be fine. Also, you can also buy a cooling pad for the laptop? It really helps with the temperature.:)
