Laptop screen broken?

My dad's just booted up his laptop and sent me a pic to me it looks like the LCD has cracked? He says there's no cracks on the screen.

Laptop when connected to the TV works fine

Any ideas told him to try booting into safe mode

Which results in the laptop screen going black

buy a replacement screen on ebay, its super easy to switch them out, somelaptops even have upgrades, looks like a crack or bad lcd to me

Yeah I thought that straight away but I don't get how it's just gone like that he swears it hasn't been dropped or had any pressure on it

He's on the lookout for a new one anyhow

It might be that the screen cable might be pinched or early signs of the graphics card giving out, but maybe pinched cable.

He mentioned last week that the fan was playing up

Maybe he tried to do the 'man' thing and beat it with his slipper till it worked again. I remember this used to be a thing in the 80s and 90s when TVs went on the blink... you gave it a slap and it it would start working again as if by magic.

In any case - ebay search your laptop model on ebay. you should be able to find some new or second hand screens that you can swap out yourself or have a tech do it for a small fee.

well ok, benefit of the doubt.. just watched a few youtube video's on removing black spots from the screen, ( i agree it could be a pinched cable but the line makes it look like a crack), take the lcd apart separate it from the back and clean between and replace / tighten..

here is the video that caught my attention, altho maybe they trolled me!

I have replaced a a pinched cable cause lines etc after opening and closing so many times the wires began to break, was 3-4$ replacement cable, take it apart see what happens when you press on the spots and sides of the lcd.

The big pools are where its been impacted, and the cracks really visible in that image. My guess its its been pushed down on from the outside while the lid was closed - cats can sometimes do this, if they leap on it.

as others have said, the screens are often easy and cheap to replace... just make sure you get the right panel, when i've done this i've always opened it up and checked model numbers first

Yea the panel/screen looks impacked by force. Replace the monitor is best suggestion

What I usually do is go on eBay and look for Cheap ones that people either *Think it's broken or they just bought a replacement one

Right took the LCD out and it's def broken

Trying to locate a new LCD now but I'm confused I've seen a few on eBay which state 1600x900 but in the description it states they are WXGA 1366 x 768 LED

And a few which are slightly more expensive but state they are 1600x900 HD+ I take it that's the one we want?

Cheapest we found was Amazon that was new

But then we found this one after googling the model number LCD screen and it says HD+ 1600x900 it's confused us

Then the refurb screen which is Refurb lcd lcd which looks identical on the back as the one my dad currently has just different barcode numbers

Thats a 17.3 inch 40pin display with the connector in the bottom left.

when it comes to panels the laptop model and brand never matter. You need to take it out because you also need the version number. Yours is rev 0 that panel has 4 revisions.

you can also check out vivo they wholsale screens customer support is good and they can generally tell you if its compatible. You dont really need to buy the same make and model, you just need one thats compatible.

this generally comes down to connection side (top, Bottom, left, right) and pin count (40 or 30pin?) most 30pins are for slim displays like ultra books. this one isnt of course but just an FYI.

resolution is generally the same. While it is sometimes possible to "upgrade" by getting a panel with a higher rez that fits the rest of the specs this only works sometimes. and by sometimes I mean not alot.

Make sure the battery is OUT of the unit before playing with the LVDS cable or you seriously risk popping the fuse on the board.

Yep we need a 40 pin LCD bottom left from the UK the one I linked on Amazon which doesn't seem to work is the cheaper but it states it's 1366x768

Ebay link for £64 Ignore what it says about HP Pavilion - HP dont have any sort of proprietary interconnect so it will work fine. Only 90 days warranty though which is pretty shitty.

Though you can get another through here which is 1 year warranty but a few pennies cheaper. Ive also bought from these people from the past and have had no trouble.

versions can mean nothing or they can break the panel or the laptop. I've seen different versions pop the fuse, melt the lvds cable or just work no problems.

digitizers are the same.

I dont reccomend getting a different version or a different resolution. You have to understand that getting either may work, but if it doesnt work it rarely just "doesnt work"; "doesnt work" generally involves some kind of damage.
