There seems to have been a fairly large W10 update in the last couple of days. I think it was Monday evening. When I turned on my computer yesterday I was asked to confirm a set of choices again (just like I did when I installed W10).

Anyway, when I got into Windows I discovered that my custom screen resolutions were gone. I have a Benq XL2720Z where I can set the refresh rate in 1Hz increments from 60 to 144Hz. So I always create at least two new "resolutions", 1920x1080@75Hz and 1920x1080@85Hz.

But I thought these were controlled by the GPU driver and that Windows wouldn't touch them. But now they're gone. I forgot to check which GPU driver is actually present now.

Has anyone else experienced something like this after the update?

Every windows update resets my audio drivers. Always defaults to 7.1 which causes some youtube videos to play no sound :(
Any reason you are not using the full 144hz refresh rate of the monitor?

Great monitor, I've got one of those too.

It sounds like the OS update has reset the NVIDIA driver profile somehow. There might be a way to save the profile (official or unofficial) to recover from this issue. I'm not at my PC so can't look into this now.

I'm curious too why you have created those lower refresh rates.

:)
The reason for the lower refresh rates is simply that I'm using v-sync (and strobing, aka Benq Blur Reduction). In Far Cry 5 the fps creeps down towards just under 80 some places, so I use 75Hz in that game (as a safety margin) just to keep the fps above it.
In Skyrim I could probably have played at 90-100Hz, but I use 85Hz as a safety margin. It's very smooth and I don't mind the lag. Anything above 70Hz really is good, since below it I will get a bit of flickering with strobing activated.
I obviously use 100Hz+ for those games that run fast enough to keep the fps above it.

OK then, back on topic. :)

What driver did you have installed before the update? Part of the build update process is to check for updated drivers and install them, if the driver you had was older than the one available through Windows Update, then Windows will update the driver.

Aha! Well that would explain it then, because my driver was 391.35.

That's kind of annoying though. Because the only way my driver settings (resolutions etc.) get reset is if it performs a clean install. And apparently it does.
I suppose the best way to avoid this then is to always be up to date with the GPU driver. Or is there any other way to circumvent this?

Anyway, good info thanks. :)

I'm pretty sure windows goes with the latest wqhl drivers because every creator's update I've had had reset drivers to wqhl drivers and my drivers are pretty much always up to date. I'm amd tho idk about nvidia.

I checked when I got home. It actually installed the same driver I already had, i.e. 391.35. And removed my settings. :wtf:

I installed the new driver (397.64) myself, but is there any way to avoid this for every W10 update that is released? Pretty annoying.

You could use some type of third-party app to stop the windows update. You can also use the postpone feature, and purposefully handle it on a day that you have time to handle it ,to avoid it being a surprise. Short of that you're pretty much stuck with it I believe.

I would think the easiest way would be to copy your Settings folder for your driver. Put it on a thumb drive or something, and then when the update has been done ,paste it back in. I don't know if that would work though ,but it's certainly worth a try since it costs nothing ,and is super easy to test

I'll admit I have never looked into where my nvidia driver settings (custom resolutions and stuff) are stored. I thought they would be in the registry? But they are actually stored in a folder?
