A group of more than 40 international experts are about to embark on a three-year research project that will culminate in a Manual on International Law Applicable to Military Uses of Outer Space.

MILAMOS Project is to ensure space activities are conducted in accordance with the rule of law.

This will involve a consideration of the existing international rules on outer space.

It will also involve integration with international humanitarian law and the rules prohibiting the use of force.

It is envisaged that at the end of the project the applicable rules will be agreed on the basis of consensus.

The MILAMOS Project is not an effort to condone warfare in outer space.

On the contrary, it seeks to prevent armed conflict and minimise the devastating impact that space technology and military operations may have on the long-term and peaceful use of outer space.

Is Russia Preparing For A Space War?

The Kremlin has launched what it claims are three communications satellites since May 2014, but analysts have claimed the spacecrafts appear to be prototype weapons.

The agile crafts – dubbed Kosmos-2491, -2499 and -2504 – appear to have been smuggled into space under the cover of the routine launch of communications satellites.

It is usual for these Rodnik communications satellites to be deployed in threes, but in this instance Moscow listed four spacecraft to be launched, in a notification to the United Nations.

The three unusually nimble satellites are able to get within a few dozen feet of other satellites, and are potentially able to spy-on, hijack and even destroy other satellites.

It is clear from their capabilities that they have the potential to become anti-satellite weapons.

Hmm.... Let me check human history for agreements on warfare...

Checked - bits of paper people pay token respect to in politics and no respect to in reality.

Right now, if anything is going to prevent military conflict in outer space, it's going to be smart politics and diplomacy and not idealistic agreements that do it. The treaty comes after political maneuvers have achieved success and in effect de-escalated the situation.

In the midst of the Cold War, the Outer Space Treaty was signed and now virtually all developed, "traditionally" nuclear-capable countries are all parties to it. Under the treaty, WMDs are not permitted to be placed/used in space or on a celestial body such as the Moon (where military activities are also prohibited).

If it is indeed true that Russia has been developing and deploying a new type of ASAT weapon aboard its regular satellite launches, the United States can be expected to respond suitably. The ASM-135 may no longer be in service, but it proved its worth and helped the US gain valuable ASAT experience in a time when most other countries did not develop such weapons. OST does not prohibit conventional weapons from being used in space. Russia appears to be reactivating a program to arm modified MiG-31s to carry ASAT missiles (the same way modified F-15As carried the ASM-135); the United States will not be standing by idly and allowing this possible "agreement" between 40 bored "experts" to stand in the way of countering this new Russian development. Neither of these treaty-renouncing powers can be expected to simply agree to deactivate all of their research and development into these weapon systems.

ASAT weapons are not a new development, nor are they some scary piece of technology that will lead to war in space. Also, the diagram of the PAK DA is bullshit. "Nuclear missile" when it comes to the bomber's payload and "outer space" for the bomber's max altitude don't belong in the same sentence. We've already covered that with the Outer Space Treaty. And no, the Outer Space Treaty isn't just some basically-pointless venture of some 40-odd "experts" with too much time on their hands. For Russia to deploy WMDs in space would be an alarming and lethal disruption to MAD and would be basically unthinkable. Nuclear weapons in space has not been even considered ever since the dismissal of Reagan's "Star Wars" and the Soviet Union's R-36ORB orbital bombardment system based on the Satan ICBM. Putin may be daring, but he isn't idiotic.

While humanity will keep building technology that better meets the requirements of space travel. Space and planets will become heavily contested because every country would want to put their own people on a new planet. Especially if there are new resources to be found there. Basically... We want oil. You have oil. So we will take that oil off you and we will do it by force if you resist
