I don't know whether it's the cold weather that is causing this or the backlight of the monitor is going to die soon.

For a period of ~30 seconds, the backlight will grow in intensity until it has reached full brightness. It starts out very dim and the light is visibly flickering until it reaches full brightness.

It is about 60F / 15C degrees where this monitor is. Today, it was a slightly colder and the backlight appeared totally off for about 10 seconds, until it was visible, and this is worrying me that it may soon die.

Once warmed up, the backlight exhibits no problems whatsoever. Once warmed up, it can be turned off and back on without the startup-dim-flickering problem.
What are your thoughts on this?

I had the same issue a user left his laptop in his car overnight. Last night it was -6 below here. I would maybe find a way to warm it up to about 25c or soo.

Not 100% if LCD's have them or how it be fitted but makes me think it's a starter issue which need to be replaced. Maybe it's just a flaw with some LCD's and normal for it work like that.

Maybe the box for the LCD tells you min and max temps required for the LCD.

I'd send it back hopefully it's under warranty right ?.

Here's more on what i am thinking

i think 60*F is going to be find for a monitor... thats plenty warm enough... lower than that I would suggest a warmer place..

I think it might be dying... how old is it?

According to the monitor's service menu:
Power On: 6054 Hours
Panel Cycle: 11186 (I don't know what this means)

It is out of the warranty period.

BTW, to access Samsung service menu:
Turn Brightness and Contrast to 0.
Press the Menu button, Then hold down the Source button until the service menu appears.
(I spent too much time searching for this information, so I'll put it here for future reference)

Actually it is about 2.5 years old. I use an aggressive monitor standby time - 8 minutes.

The warranty was 3 years from original purchase date, but I had taken advantage of it once when the original monitor I bought developed a yellow horizontal line across the entire screen. The warranty period is over now.

I've noticed this happening sometimes upon start up w/ my monitor as well, which is oh about 8 months old now, also a samsung (2232bw). It only lasts for a few seconds in my case though and only sometimes and otherwise it's flawless (this has been happening for about 4-5 months now, but like I said it's only occasional, I haven't picked up on a temperature thing), so I'm thinking (hoping) it isn't anything major. What is in the service menu? Anything to fix this?

email Samsung see what they say.. i have had over 3000 hours more on mine but it does sound like the starter has gone, not sure if fluorescent tubes flicker when breaking down. All though just e-mail them as they might give you some idea whats going on.

Hate to think this one of mine may do it in a year or so and mines on \ off all the dam time..

what i meant was usage time young... the number of hours you gave divided by 24 work out to be around ~260 days, which is 'young'. But yes I would e-mail samsung/ call them, tell em whats up and hopefully it will work out.

Humidity: 10% ~ 80%, non-condensing

Humidity: 5% ~ 95%, non-condensing

You're getting close to the boundaries, but you're not quite there.
