Left 4 Dead 2 Banned in Australia

What is a shame is Australia ruins it for all of us. In order to not have 2 different versions, Valve will cut something out of the US version (really the world version) and therefore make it conform to the standards of Aussie rules. That's why in these times (and during the Fallout 3 release) I hated the Aussie standards, who ruin it FOR ALL OF US DAMN YOU!

"all of us" "US version". The world is bigger than that you know. Most games already more than two versions. The EU version usually isn't the same as the US version.

I hope you don't prefer US standards though, the hot coffee thing made little sense, and that's just one example. Unfortunately oversensitive brainless idiots live in every country and somehow there are enough of them to have influence.

we dont have an R18 classification for games.

If a game isnt under the requirements of M15, then they cant sell it in australia.

Its ridiculously stupid, IMO - i'm 18 and i can literally just import the game if i wanted to, or get an american friend to "gift" it to me via steam.

Bloody hell it is crap isnt it? I mean they let something like GTA get sold which is more realistic than L4D. I like GTA btw it is just stupid how they can let certain games sell and not others .

I heard this today also, IMO wont take long to make any necessary adjustments (or realizations about letting L4D go thru) and we'll all be playing happily.

Each time the Australian government tries to act authoritarian/totalitarian, it falls flat on its face.

Being banned in Australia is good for worldwide sales. Remember, Australia is a (relatively) small gaming market... because life, beach, bbqs and parties rule in addition to population figures not being anywhere near US, Europe or Asia levels! So with the ban they get free marketing, lose a few thousand AUS sales, but gain tens of thousand worldwide sales through free publicity and it obtains the "it must be dark, serious and morally unsound" label that is a REQUIREMENT for success in the US.

wow this is why it is banned.

UPDATE: News.com.au has a copy of the board report. The PDF file indicates that the game was refused classification due to 'high impact violence' against 'living humans infected with a rabies-like virus' that is unsuitable for minors under the age of 18.

haha rabies-like virus

oh man doesn't that mean Zombie

Simple, all they need to do is remove the Zombies from L4D2

I can see it now: Left 4 Dead 2 - Extreme Zombie-less Edition :)

"all of us" "US version". The world is bigger than that you know. Most games already more than two versions. The EU version usually isn't the same as the US version.

US standards are more than just games though. Its all about what you prefer in your culture really. Also what you have to tolerate and sustain as a country.

Japan and Korea have a rather large illustrated Child porn industry. I am glad its not the same in the USA because its so heavily socially discouraged.

On the USA comment:
The only reason the hot coffee thing was an issue was because it circumvented the rating system. If you lock away content and do not reveal it to the rating system its against the rules. They should have fully removed it from the disk really. If the Hot coffee minigame was openly available in the game it would have been fine because it would have given it the corresponding rating and not removed it from the market.

The only reason these things are happening in Australia is that it comes from a certain political movement that I forgot the name of. The USA has similar groups that have major influence in the republican party here.

I believe the word liberal is reversed in Australia. In Australia their "liberal" is the same as our "Republican". Our "Democrat" is the same as their "labor party" I believe. I am not sure if the UK's labor party is the same as the Aussie one.

gain tens of thousand worldwide sales through free publicity and it obtains the "it must be dark, serious and morally unsound" label that is a REQUIREMENT for success in the US.

Care to strap a bomb on your back and say it like you really mean it.

Pokemon disproves your theory of it being a requirement. But by all means take every opportunity to attack the US. We are used to it. I bet whatever country you are in or prefer, sells things only on the true merits of the product with the most informed consumers humanity has to offer.

Im assuming that this means we wont be able to get it from steam. God i hate this country sometimes.

The quicker we get an 18+ rating for games the better or Michael Atkinson quits either would be great.

It does seem bizarre that Australia doesn't have an 18+ rating. Trip, you should lobby for one.

Somehow i dont think the government would listen to me dont know why. =/

If it does end up getting classified it wont be worth playing as it would be cut to shreds.

While I disagree with what the government are doing, you have to see where they are coming from.

While you can turn around and argue it is up to parents responsiblities to stop their kids playing such games, you need to realise that in reality, it isn't going to happen. Sure, you can blame bad parenting, but how is blaming that going to stop kids playing these games?

Honestly, my 8 yr old cousin plays GTA because his mother didn't know what it was when he got it as a b'day gift. Now, that kid blurts out more swears than me!

I mean as I said, it should be up to the parent but it's never going to happen. Only the other day my mum saw me playing counter strike and was like WOW why do you play killing games. I'm 19 now and have been playing since I was like 10....and she realised the other day what I play (and mind you, she was outraged, lol).

Well that is bad parenting, haha, i mean you just said it she neglected to realize that for 9 years you were playing "killing games", my mom knew i was playing them but thought i had a better head on my shoulders and wouldn't go around copying what is saw or heard in the game.

I think if parents put a little effort into actually seeing what there kids are doing in videogames/real life.

A lot of dumb shit would stop happening

I'm not so small minded I think that there is one version for the US, and therefore that was the world version, I was just kinda making the other versions into one to compare to Australia. But also, remember that the games have to match up and work with others around the world, hell I play with people in the UK all the time on L4D. They don't have a different version there do they?

Well not really, she's worked a full time job for the past 15 yrs and me, being the sneaky I was, only played it when I got home from school/when she wasn't around.

I mean if she knew I had worked out the password to the computer (back then), im sure she would have stopped me

Yeah apparently the average age of the gamer is 30yrs old. Not surprised because they got started originally on Pong methinks. TPU kinda under represents that class but....

So basically what they are saying is that it's ok to kill people in computer games, just as long as you do it "cleanly" - apparently they are fine with the killing part, but when it comes to showing the internal anatomy of the human body it goes too far.

What do you expect from a continent of Irish thieves. (Waits for the Aussie boot to the ass)

Dan. Can we all agree no one here wants to see the "Hot Coffee mod" in a Left 4 Dead game? I mean who wants to see zombie rape other than maybe Erocker?
