A general question, so perhaps we can expect general answers / preferences.

How long would you use your motherboard before changing/selling it off for a better and a more recent one? Suppose that you've just installed the latest...

I bought a 750ftw board when they were first released(2008). Stopped using it last June when I went for crossfireX with 5870s on a EP45-UD3P. Donated the 750ftw board to JrRacinFan to fix his sister's computer just last week. Upgraded to sandy bridge last month. No idea how long I'll keep this board, I'll replace it when I have reason to replace it.

Usually do a cpu sidegrade/upgrade every year and if it calls for a new board, that gets switched out as well.

I've had my Gigabyte X58 for about 2 years now, prior I had an Evga X58 for about a year.

I plan on keep these until late 2012 or the next batch, but my 970 is pulling so strong with an SSD I just dont see a reason to upgrade it.

Out of all my systems I have built I have only had 1 motherboard failure. That was a Nf7-s board that took a dump 2 days after I got it. So I promptly returned for the replacement board I still have running.

As for me, when I see the value of my mobo's reselling price falls below 10$ (or 10£) I'd most probably consider to replacing it with a fairly more recent one but not necessarily the latest.

Do you change mobo (along with other parts) subject to your gaming requirements??

I usually get a decent system and after about 6 months I get tired of it and sell it. Then I use scrap computers for a couple of months before realizing I actually need something better. So I get a decent system again which I sell 6 months later.

But this motherboard I've now had for like 6 months so I think I'm breaking the cycle here.

;)

Unless the mobo dies, which has only happened 3 times. twice with an old MSI Platinum Neo2 and once with a Biostar Tpower i45.

provided the board is still functioning after 2-3years. my PC usually gets parted out and sold off to friends or put up on ebay to recoup some cash after building a new rig.

If i cant sell the parts the i will see if i can donate them to a good cause

Usually buy a decent mid-high board to begin with and keep that for a few years till the socket isnt used anymore and has no upgrade paths left.

My current motherboard has seen two CPUs, an i7-920 and the current one, still rocking after 3 years (bought it some days after release)

I generally use my motherboard until the life cycle of the socket has come to an end, so it's time to upgrade to LGA2011 :)

It has seen on an X3 720BE,an X4 965BE and recently 1090T...looking for 990FX-UD3 and FX8120 lately

While we can see quite clearly that there are groups where people prefer to use their components until either completely worn out or goes out of date, and also salvage the part(s) after 9-12 months of use for better and latest parts.

I don't play much games so I don't change parts as frequent unless it's the game that I really want to so badly and it makes my system looks old and haggard. lol!

Thanks guys for your responses!
