Sup all, I have a little odd request. Could you help me list PC cases that have 200mm side fan support? I tried with Google, but results are inconsistent. Could be old stuff as well, doesn't have to be new cases. So far I have listed:

- Corsair Carbide 500R
- Cooler Master HAF XM
- MSI Interseptor
- NZXT Vulcan

If thread is inappropriate, I will understand if it's closed, but I wanted to see examples of this particular setup with 200mm side panel fan. Thank you in advance.

I don't recall an Antec case with a 200mm side fan. I know they had cases like the twelve hundred with a top 200mm fan. Cooler Master was the major player with 200mm fans so I would look into their old catalog.

I also am not aware of any Antec cases with 200mm side fan support.

But I am curious as to why you are asking about these? I ask because side panel fans are not always desired because they are not always effective. In fact, in some scenarios, they are counterproductive when it comes to the most efficient cooling. This is because, in general, the desired and most effective cooling solution is with a front-to-back (or bottom-to-top) "flow" of air through the case. A side panel fan can actually create turbulence inside the case and disrupt that desired "flow" of air.

It is my own personal experience that side panel fans do more harm than good EXCEPT when the fans blow directly into a tube inside the case that then channels the fan's flow directly onto the CPU or GPU. So in my cases, and in many cases used by colleagues, side panel fans are not used because cooler temps are achieved without them.

Another problem with side panel fans is they are mounted on the side panel. Compared to the rear, top, front or bottom panels which have ridged angled-bends, corners and even rivets for fantastic support of those panels, side panels tend to be huge, flimsy sheets of thin metal and/or plastic that are typically secured with just two thumb screws. These panels wobble and can easily vibrate and reverberate any noise and vibration from even the best quality fans. This reverberation can even amplify that fan noise even though 200mm fans tend to be the quietest around.

Depending on the width of the case, and the location of the side panel fan, it could interfere with a tall cooler or expansion cards.

The general trend today is to have air intakes filtered with removable, washable air filters. I have never seen a filtered side panel fan intake - most likely because it would take up even more space than the fan alone. While many of these vents consists of tiny holes forming a tight mesh, they are not as effective at trapping dust as actual air filters are. Large fans move massive amounts of air - along with all the dust that floats in it.

Last, side panels fans need power. This means, of course, a power cable must be run to the side panel, and may need to be connected and disconnected every time the side panel is removed and replaced. This is inconvenient but also detracts from the best, most tidy cable management.

I have removed Antec, I thought they had, but only other positions indeed.

@Bill_Bright thank you for the time to summarise all this. I will address each point below.

- why? -> recently I started putting more load on my PC and my current case doesn't do very well to be honest. By accident I saw a listing yesterday for a 2nd hand Carbide 500R (which was sold, before I could act on it) and my old fascination with big-a$$ fans came at play. I absolutely agree with you about the effect of side panel fans and turbulence when the front fans are used. However, I'm not gonna go this way. My plan is to run big side fan + rear exhaust + roof exhaust B. No front or bottom fans. I know this will create negative pressure, but I am fine with it.

- dust: again you are absolutely correct about no fan filters on these big fans. But, I have removed the dust filters on my current case as well. I am used to cleaning my case periodically anyhow.
- vibrations: I can't say about the vibrations really, but most 200mm- fans I have access to here locally are running something like 500-700 RPM. I don't imagine this will create much vibration.
- interference with coolers: I am only having top-flow very compact coolers. For my humble case, this is not something to consider for now.

All in all, we will see where this goes when I get my hands on something. It's more of a hobby thing than something super urgent. I can see side fans are practically dead these days.

The CM Storm Sniper. I still have one gathering dust.

One 200mm on top exhaust, one 200mm front intake, and one 200mm side intake.

I have an empty Corsair 400R in my basement if your interested. Same case internally as the 500R but has two 120mm or 140mm side fans positions instead of one 200mm. Not sure what shipping would cost to Bulgaria though...

This old article did a lot of testing and would disagree... At worst, it's only a small boost to an already good front to back airflow setup. But not a detriment. And of course, it'll especially be beneficial to those who want to keep their drive cages as well... instead of setups where everything is stripped out or these retarded cases where the whole front is grilless.. i.e. NZXT).

It seems the big mistake in screwing up airflow that is common with some is putting fans on the top front (best to just keep one in back).

Years ago I had an antec three hundred and played around with a side panel fan using a 120mm fan as both intake and then out. I forget the gpu (probably an Nvidia 8800GT) but found it increased temps in one direction by 1-2F and did nothing in the other direction.

On a side note, how do you like your Noctua U12A? I ordered one to play around with and see how it compares to the U12s.

It's great. I think the bigger difference with the U12s is the fans, so if you have one already, you'd save some cash by just upgrading to those alone. Unless you want the extra few degrees from the heatsink too.

I became such a fan of the new A12s that I decked out my case with them as well.

:( Note my comment was about much more than just cooling efficiency. And also note I did NOT say in every case side panel fans are counterproductive. I specifically said side panel fans are:
not always desired
not always effective
in some scenarios
It is my own personal experience
in my cases
in many cases used by colleagues, side panel fans are not used because cooler temps are achieved without them.

So clearly, for some, side panel fans are fine. But regardless, my comment brought up several points against them including the fact side panel fans typically don't draw air through filters. Side panels (being large sheets of metal or plastic) can reverberate sound more than the ridged, reinforced rear, top, front and bottom panels. And there's still the issue of running the power cable to the fan. So it is not just about efficient cooling.

The bottom line is to try it and see. I just know for me, I'll stick with filtered intakes and tidier cable management, which means no side panel fans.

Edit comment: Fixed a couple typos.

While it is not stock you can easily add a side 200MM fan to the Thermaltake Core X9. You will have to create you own screw holes though. The funny thing about that case is that there are dust filters all over the place. When I did that the temps on all components dropped by about 6 degrees. Even NVME drives idle in the high 20s low 30s and my GPUs sit at 28 C on idle.

I always found cases with side fans a pain to deal with when taking on/off the side panel.

You seem to have missed some cases with Side intakes like:

Cooler Master Storm Sniper
Cooler Master HAF X
NZXT Phantom
Thermaltake Armor Revo / Armor Revo Snow Edition
Thermaltake Armor Revo Gene / ARMOR REVO GENE Snow Edition

Been Using the Armor Revo Snow Edition for years. I especially like the implementation of the side mounted fan because it connects without cables. It just uses a pin to pad system that has worked really well

200mm fans need a slightly better design than looking just like case fans. They should look halfway in-between a big ol' box fan and computer case fan.
I'd like to have a fan behind the mother board, but that's incredibly rare these days. I do have an idea for a set up with 200mm fans.

Necro'd thread. Would say HAF-XB Evo, a classic design still sold today. Would have to be top 200mm though.
