LiteON iHES208-09 2 issues?

I started a new desktop build in November. I managed to find a "NEW" sealed LiteON Blu-ray Disc Combo drive. This unit was manufactured in November 2009 and states " works with Windows XP SP2, and Windows Vista and later " on the package! I installed the drive and the bundled Cyberlink Power DVD BD Solutions software. This software contains Power DVD 8 for Blu-ray and will not play current Blu-ray titles! When the message to upgrade pops up, I get an error message. I installed a Power DVD 22 trial copy and the Drive functions and plays Blu-rays flawlessly. Is there a way to play Blu-rays without spending more money on software for this Drive?

OK, I use VLC on my other PC's but haven't tried it to play Blu-rays on the new Drive yet, Thanks.

According to this post. BR might not even work on VLC

From what ive read. You'll still need to download some sort of codec or have the supported codecs to get VLC or MPC-HC to run BR's. 4k BRs are HEVC/H.265 while the rest are H.264 or MPEG-2.

If you can find a codec pack with BR support (HEVC/H.265) you might be able to run your BRs.

At least when I had a BD drive, I managed to get VLC playing them. I followed these steps.

Well.... @Steeve-007UK, VLC will play Blu-ray discs but has to have keys to the AACS library to do so. I may experiment with it later. @FreedomEclipse, You are correct. VLC will work on Unprotected Blu-ray content with proper codecs but Protected content, (movies, games, etc.) require AACS manipulation. @Ruru, your videobyte.org solution plays my Blu-ray disc with a 30 day free trial. It appears that the same old DRM/Encryption wall for games and movies is alive and well. I only have 3 or 4 Blu-ray titles at present. I have a pair of Sony external BD players for my TV. I'll keep watchin them on TV until I finish my new build. Thanks to all for the info as always, Happy Holidays!!!:toast:
