Hi all little bit of advice please i'm not made of money but wondering what peoples thoughts are on this build.
Many for gaming but some business work.

Gigabyte Aorus B550 Elite
or
MSI B450 Tomahawk
DDR4 16gb 3600
Ryzen 5 3600 3rd Generation with stock cooler for now.
or
Ryzen 5 3600x
Asus Tuf Gaming XT5700 8gb

Anything you think I should change etc for around same sort of price index.

The 3600X performs 3% better than the 3600 at best. If the price difference is anything greater than $10, the 3600X is not worth it. If you're US, the 3600 shows $172 on pcpartpicker while the 3600X shows $218. 3600 is the clear winner there.

B450 Tomahawk vs. B550 Aorus Elite is a a little trickier. Do you need PCIe 4.0? If not, the B450 Tomahawk is a great option still. The Aorus Elite is a good B550 board, but with AMD having rescinded their statement about B450 not being compatible with the 4000 series CPUs coming later this year, it seems silly to spend more money on a B550 board since I would imagine the 5000 series CPUs would require a new motherboard anyway due to moving to the AM5 socket or DDR5.

Not sure what exact pricing is on that 5700XT model (PCPP lists $410), but the Sapphire Pulse is a great choice for $10 less at $400 - it was tied with the Gigabyte Gaming OC for best overall 5700XT according to GamersNexus.

Thanks for the input.
The B550 Aorus Elite say they are ready for the new AMD later this year
but if they need a update on memory to make them viable as well then no point it getting a board with DDR4 slots i guess
I think I will go Tomahawk.

Hard to say w/o knowing that the PC is being asked to do ... if it's just gaming and Video / photo editing, we are now using the 10600k if folks just don't wanna wait. That being said, we are recommending folks to wait till the holiday season when there's more choice available and what is available now gets knocked down in price.

I think I will go Tomahawk.
Both motherboards will be compatible with the 4000 series release later this year - B550 will be out of the box, the Tomahawk I believe will need a BIOS update from MSI. Both won't have any issues with memory for the time being - my point was that DDR5 is in the pipeline (rumored to begin mass production next year, although it will still likely be a few year before DDR5 becomes mainstream) and you should ask yourself how long it will be until you likely need to upgrade off of the AM4 platform. In theory you should be fine, being able to pop a 3950X into the AM4 socket should have you covered as far as CPUs go. If you plan on sticking with AM4 and just upgrading the GPU when necessary, even a 2080 Ti has been shown to only have single digit performance loss on PCIe 3.0 x8 vs. x16. I guess there is the potential for the new GPUs coming out this year to make better use of the bandwidth increase PCIe 4.0 brings, but we won't know until they've been released and have been reviewed by third parties.

As John mentions, it isn't exactly the best time to build at the moment - prices and availability are kinda wonky thanks to COVID, and with new AMD CPUs and both Nvidia and AMD GPUs coming later this year, if you can afford to wait a few months it isn't the worst idea. You could then reap the rewards of waiting in the form of new hardware or price cuts on the current gen stuff.

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
1. AMD's next processors will NOT have DDR5. All B550 boards will support Zen3 with DDR4. Zen4... who knows but since THAT is expected to be DDR5, nothing will go past Zen3 (4000 series) anyway. In other words, B550 is fine to mesh both worlds between B450 and X570.
2. If this is a gaming machine, clearly the RX 580 would be best... but those are old GPUs... I'd rather you go 5600XT or something than to go RX 580.

You still haven't mentioned what you are using this machine for. Again.......hard to give you the best help when we don't know that/you didn't respond to the question. :)

Both decent builds - they both pale in comparison in terms of gaming performance compared to the OP with a 5700XT though. As @EarthDog mentioned, the build with the 580 will give you more FPS.

You still haven't mentioned what you are using this machine for.
From the OP:
Many for gaming but some business work.

As far as the extent of that work, who knows...

Have you considered the MSI B550-A Pro motherboard? It seems to be one of the better cheaper B550 boards:

It doesn't cost much more than the Tomahawk you are considering, it is what I intend to purchase for an upcoming build. Personally, I would avoid the stock cooler and get a cheap tower cooler, most 3000 series owners acknowledge that these chips tend to run hot. I am looking at the Scythe Mugen rev. B for a 3700X, but there are cheaper options, such as the Deepcool Gammaxx, or the Artic Freezer 34 eSports Duo, which also get good reports. Then again, if you are not worried about noise or your processor having a higher boost potential, you might be able to live with the stock cooler for a while, just my 2 cents.

Since you don't mention things like PSU, case, storage etc. what all are you bringing over from your previous build, if anything?

Granted that might seem a minor detail, but if say you have a high end heatsink it might be worth getting AM4 brackets for it - if only since while both the 3600 and 3600x both come with heatsinks, the 3600x heatsink is quite a bit better (but that only matters if you weren't budgeting to get a better heatsink OR <natch> reuse an old one).

It probably won't make much difference, but it's worth asking.

You;ll likely get more help starting your own thread. ;)

That said, have you tried updating your drivers to the latest version? If they are up to date, roll back. Reseat the card... fill in your system specs... etc.
