Locked Dell hard drive.

Hi there I tried to do a clean install on my Dell all in one and it says the drive is locked I have tried a few things but no luck, any ideas.

Probably due to an existing Dell recovery partition. If you're positive you don't ever want to recover using hte Dell recovery method, then do the advanced drive options, delete all partitions and try again.

You can do this in Computer Management -> Disk management. Select the drive, delete the partitions and format.

Hi it won't let me do anything, when I highlight and right click the partitions it just says help.

When faced with proprietary drives or SSDs that fight me all the way. I pop them in a HD Dock and things get much easier.

EDIT: BOOT FROM USB DRIVE: The fastest is to load Windows 10 from a USB flash drive and at the onset, delete all partitions, each one individually.
No partitions will exist and from the empty space just install, OS will setup what it needs.

You are going to need to backup anything you want to save prior to this.

Hi sorry for not getting back to you but I have tried all you have asked me to do and as it was a

Samsung 970 EVO PLUS 500GB M.2 PCIe High Performance NVMe SSD/Solid State Drive I had installed to which I cloned the original DELL hard drive to I even formatted it using the caddy that I used for cloning but when I put it into the AIO the Microsoft windows 10 disc cannot find it.

You will need to run diskpart from a admin level command line to get around the locks.

Task Manager, File Run New Task, check the run with admin privileges, CMD and in the black window type "diskpart /?" without the quotes and then select the disk, and delete all partitions on the disk.

Do what @Steevo said :
1/ launch the command line interface (cmd) as administrator
2/type diskpart
3/type list disk
4/ select your DELL drive by typing select disk X (where X is the number of your DELL drive)
5/ wipe everything (including data and GPT/MBR) by typing clean
7/create a new partition by typing create partition primary
8/select the newly created partition by typing select partition 1
9/format it to NTFS quickly by typing format fs=ntfs quick
10/ give it a drive letter by typing assign
11/ type exit to close the windows, you're done

Use rufus to make USB key with 10 and not media creation tool. Then do "dd mode" on the screen that comes up after..

Also it has way more options as well than the media creation tool

Sorry I couldn't get my head round that but I have managed to get it sorted, I installed an ordinary ssd and copied windows to that then put the Samsung 970 EVO PLUS 500GB M.2 into a usb caddy and cloned the windows from the ordinary ssd to the Samsung 970 EVO PLUS 500GB M.2 and then installed that into the all in one.

Your speed looks fine in the screenshot you have shown.

I usually make a DVD copy of the recovery partition of any machine with such a setup. I have a USB DVD drive to be able to handle those machine that lack one.

Then after testing the DVD backup I can then swap hard disks for SSD etc and restore the machine to the original setup

Bit of work but backup operating systems are handy
