Just your standard optical drive, I want a blu ray player I believe it needs to be 5.25 inches, and I want it to already have the blu ray playback software (its super expensive to buy separately), links welcome...

having a hard time finding a non-OEM drive, so if anyone can find it at a reasonable price I would appreciate it, thanks and take care.

edit: I don't care about burning, I just want to watch some blu ray movies once in awhile

Not sure what software you mean?

Blue Ray requires proprietary software to play a BR disk. OEMs do not have this software

Wow, did not know that. I never dallied with blu-ray, there was much talk of in built DRM at the time and I didn't like the invasive nature of it.

I've got a good 30-40Mbps dl speed now so i can just stream HD instead. Happy days.

Exactly this, we have 85mbps internet, BRDVD's are too expensive, easier to just stream them. And I've never wanted to burn 30GB of data to a disk, I have a USB 3.0 for that.

Indeed, that's exactly why it needs all that artificially expensive "special" software to play back BR discs and is why I've not bothered with it.

i use it myself on my anime blu-ray's i have brought from the us, and since i couldn't get PowerDVD to work no matter the version bcs of my Asus Xonar Essence STX wasn't compatible with the PowerDVD player i changed over and i have played every blu-ray i tried so far with no problems.

LG Black 12X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA In...

My LG Blu-ray came with a copy of PowerDVD 10 which plays Blu-rays. I have had no issue watching my Blu-rays. PowerDVD will occasionally harass you about getting their Pro software though.

TLM u need a realtek audio card to get full compatibility of PowerDVD and since i don't have that, it lags for me, and there ain't a fix for it, not even version 12 could do it on my system in specs and i had the Ultra version, but i haven't tried version 13 just pointing it out.

The PowerDVD bundle that ship with drives are 2ch downmix. Only the paid version has 5.1/7.1 output.

TotalMedia Theather gets discounts several times over the year, I got mine for $55 (30% discount). If you want Windows Media Center integration you'll have to go with either PowerDVD or TotalMedia.

Hadn't heard about UFUSoft but it seems solid. In terms of features seems to be on part with TotalMedia except for the Media Center integration.

Just by chance I actually got PowerDVD Pro 12 late last year from Newegg for I think 20% off. It's not much, but considering the normal price I couldn't pass it up! Definately worth it in an HTPC and to have MC integration.

Yeah but you also said after saying that in another post that you were also using a region switching hack tool.

My opinion is that the internal Blu-ray players are not worth it due to a few factors.

1. It takes a software player, which are subject to copyright protection checks home theater players are not.

2. You often have problems with build versions of the software players only working for a certain length of time or number of movies because they change the security codes often.

3. The internal hardware PC Blu-ray players are pretty cheaply made.

If you want to avoid ongoing hassles, just get a home theater Blu-ray player. Ones with trusted name brands start at about $76 on Amazon currently. If you add the price of an internal player to the software it takes and the ongoing hassles, it's easily worth it to just get a home theater one and be done with it.

There's always AnyDVD. On my main I have AnyDVD (w/lifetime updates) + OEM PowerDVD 8 (2.1ch) and I've yet to find a disc I can't play. In fact I would recommend AnyDVD over a Bluray player software since VLC can play unprotected Blurays.

It costs way more than a standalone player though. :ohwell:

I dunno how bluray still exists, would it not be cheaper to put everything on flashdrives by now? I guess that would put companies out of business because all u need to do is plug a flashdrive into ur tv and voila hd

Benchmark Scores I don't benchmark.
I have a realtek audio codec as do most people. Sorry had that issue with PowerDVD player. I also have access to the 5.1 surround sound and I didn't pay for anything. And while an upgrade cost money, I get the Blu-ray encoding updates at no cost so that was all I needed.

I am not sure why people thing this is so complicated. I even found a hacked driver that allows me to play Blu-ray on VLC. Granted that too some work and about 40 minutes to find the right update pack, but it is an option.

This is easier than you guys are making it. Sorry you had trouble whenever you tried this, but I got my drive around Dec and have not had one single issue watching all of Sparticus on Blu-ray, Avengers, and 3 other anime series.

LOL at the comet they are cheaply made really tell me why my first gen 8 year old LG Multi Blu is going strong? Also those realtek drivers are the built in chips for AMD and Nvidia like I said in other posts several times USE THE GPU SOUND when playing BLU RAY It has nothing to offer really if your not hooked into a mid to high end AV/Receiver (Hence my Audio is Onkoy) to decode the data for DTS HD OR Dolby HD 5.1/7.1 and have it setup in Power DVD 8-13 under audio.

But if your looking for the cheap go with either a LG or Samsung drives they are the 2 best ones to buy.If you go the Powerdvd 8-13 way just keep updating them with the free updates until a new release(last Year it was The Avengers Blu Ray) comes out that will never play until you pay for the newer version and repeat. You can go doing this for 2 years tops.

And too you guys that stream that is fine and dandy Just watch those movies all day and just wait for the prices of overage show up on your internet bills and watching movies without DTS/DOLBY HD5.1/7.1 suck balls to me and why Blu Rays are still around. You guys that do this, really need to get a AV with 5.1/ 7.1 DTS/Dolby HD support and actually hear your movies.Because when you do ,you will understand what I am saying.
