Hello everyone,

I'm helping a friend fix his Dell Optiplex 5090 slim profile office machine for some light gaming on a minimal budget. The specs are:

  • CPU: i3 10105F
  • RAM: 16GB
I found an RTX 3050 on Newegg, but I'm wondering if there are any cheaper alternatives that fit the following criteria:

  • Single slot
  • No external power
Here's the link to the RTX 3050 I found:

I'm open to both AMD/NVidia and Intel options, as well as workstation cards that can handle light gaming.

Any suggestions on what I should look for?

Thanks!

Probably a GTX LP 1650 which obviously isn't as good as a RTX 3050, i would say that's probably the single best GPU without PCIe power connector you can get, there are some RTX 4000 prosumer cards though likely more expensive, probably find a RX 6400 XT cheaper than $200 though, but will suffer with it's 4 PCIe lanes@PCIe 3x, still probably fine for casual gaming on a SFF system like this, would look at those options and weigh up the cost/performance accordingly

Looks like the board crapped out. There is no video output, tried 2 different video cards on 2 different PCIe slots. I can see the Hdd lights keep blinking showing OS is loading and on my watt meter it shows about 35w being used. Keyboard light comes on. Even with wired connection I can't see the machine on my network.

My friend got it from his work, looks like the tech people already removed the CPU and kept it aside as junk. No wonder this is broken lol.

Single slot without 6-pin usually means rx 6400. I didn’t even know that a single slot 3050 exists. It’s obviously more powerful than the 6400, but personally I would try to fit a branded 2-slot LP 3050 and avoid the Yeston (no offence, just don’t know almost anything about the brand). Plus a reminder, rx 6400 consumes about 20w less than a 6gb 3050, but the single slot version still reaches 75-80 degrees during gaming in SFF cases.

Board is toast, not spending any more time on this. I learned about some of these single slot SFF video card options.

Similar SSF PC but after adding riser + new PSU he fit inside bigger GPU inside

Or you can use angle grinder on case to cut more space for GPU ;)
Nice. Gone are those days of modding, no time to even game nowadays.

If that board worked my friend would have been super excited. May be I should post in Buy section to see if anyone wants to throw the board for free lol

You can find those boards pretty cheap on Fleabay. $50-60.

Also, it will take a dual slot GPU. That x4 slot will run a GPU just fine. I ran a RX 560LP in my 7020 desktop for a very long time without issue.

You could actually put a 4060LP in there, there exist converters to plug a 24 pin into that proprietary dell 8 pin plug. Get a silverstone 350w TFX and stick it in with a 4060LP. That's what I ended up doing to mine.

Frankly I'm obsessed with this shatastic dell boxes.

A shame. this is one of those oddball cases where the 3050 6gb actually would have made sense. There's even single slot options, like the Yeston, not sure if there's others though.
