Hello all,

I just build this new set up and now I'm looking to upgrade my video card to also play games such as need for speed the run for example. I'm runing a i7 3770k ivy bridge, with 16gb ripjaws and a 256gb crucial SSD drive. My latest pc was a HP slimline which I upgraded with a raedon hd 5450 to watch hd movies. Needless to say I installed this card in my new set up..but its just not cutting it anymore cause I want to play newer games.

So I'm looking to have a good card to replace the one I have now...I don't want to pay all to much for it now either since I still have some other upgrades that I want to purchase too

Any ideas?

Thanks for the help

AMD 7850 is a great budget card (matches some of the high end cards from 6-12months ago) What are you looking to spend?

I just bought a his radeon 7950 for 320$ a ref model and im playing some of the latest games like maxp3 and sniper 2 among others, and its working very well, i can max out everything except aa in most games ive tried, thats without any oc too, i considered the new nvidia 660ti but it's more pricey here and i think its only 2 gb memory mainly, 256 bus speed as opposed to 384 which may make a difference in the long run i'm not sure?

All depends how much fundage~$$$ you have?

Well I'm thinking some along the $100 mark, is that doable? Or do I have to go a little higher, also I should mention, I need a hdmi with that, since I want to connect to my flatty. Thx

For $100 you may be able to swing a 7770 or a 6850. They're both decent lower end cards but don't expect to game at max settings or anything like that (most likely medium quality is OK).

For everything else they are fine

Hm...ok...let's say I want to max out the resolution of a better game, what card would be on the lower end pricewise to handle that?

Radeon 7850's go for under $200 atm. I use one and it runs all of my games smooth at 1080p (max settings most of the time) :)

EDIT- jetster's suggestion is hard to beat... that's a very good card..

That depends on how much you use it for gaming, if your a person what likes to play a lot, then i would recommend spending a tad more and going for 6850 as minumum preferably 7850, i'ts worth it in the long run, as if it doesn't live up to your expectations, you'll only end up selling it and spending more anyways possibly.;)

Budget, games, resolution played at and settings preferred? Most don't seem to think of mentioning these key things. The primary problems you will face are power, space and heat. HP Slimlines are small cases, not exactly good for gaming GPUs.

The most robust PSU an HP rig will have is usually 500w, and only in their better systems. Count on it having less than average amperage for it's wattage though, so you could look at it as maybe a 400-450 watter at best.

It's not that it can't be done with the existing case and PSU, you'd just be limited to the smaller, cooler GPUs that draw less power. Check the label on your PSU and tell us what wattage and amperage it's rated at.

Model # of PSU may be adequate. You're looking for the rails that say +12v.

@ Frag Maniac

no i do understand what you are saying...
but the slimline was my previous rig..
ive build a new platform

it is a i7 3770k ivy
with an asus p8z77 v motherboard and 16gb ripjaws ;)

sso i think i shouldnt have any problems but my budget..
i know that better gaming cards are more then out my pricerange...i would just like to have something that i can use as a good HD card with HDMI and something for my favorite games..like the whole need for speed franchise..including the newer one..the run...
a good medium but still good grafix card for all of that..and it wouldnt hurt if i can max out all the settings ;)

thank you

Need 4 Speed The Run can be a bit demanding. Plus, you figure the better card you get now, the less chance there will be for you to have to upgrade earlier than you want.

Question... What power supply (Brand/Model/Wattage) do you have in your rig?

In that case it would be a 7750 or 550 Ti. Near equal performance and price, and both can be had for around $100. Personally I'd lean toward the 550 Ti though.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/HD_7750/26.html

A 550 Ti requires 450w PSU with 28a on the 12v rail for total system power. A 7750 only requires a 400w PSU with 16a on the 12v rail for total system power.

Yeah, I know, that's Greek to you. Just open your case and look at the sticker on the PSU. The PSU is the metal box inside the case with the PC's power cord attached to it. Either take a pic of the sticker on it and post it here, or tell us what each +12v amount is. Each +12v designation is one 12 volt rail of the PSU.

The PSU sticker should look something like this:

You may have to upgrade your PSU if you don't have enough amperage for the 550 Ti, but the one you have would likely power the 7750 OK. Both cards can play NFS The Run maxed out @ 1080p btw. That's not accounting for any added AA/AF though.

First I would like to thank you all for the help so far;)

My power supply is a thermaltake 750watt tr series
My friend told me that I should go with this cause its better to have a bigger power supply since its a #@%&*? To upgrade later ;)

So will the 550 ti be a good solution? Cause pricewise it fits for now

If you want to buy one new vs used and you only want to spend $100 max, at the very least it's a good temporary solution yes.

No. Look for a HD7770.

I would skip that and just get something decent instead to complement the rest of the rig. Something along the lines of 660Ti and 7950, but if budget doesn't work out then 7850 is very good bang for buck. Would not recommend any lower, but if money is absolutely tight then 7750/550Ti at $90 is good, 7770 at $120 is better.

You can get a decent used card for around 100$ This would be your best option if that is the budget allotted. 100$ would get you say 5870 maybe or GTX 470.
