Hello,

I got a Gigabyte GTX1070 G1 Gaming for one of my kids, and the cooler seems not too effective (ive cleaned it, and replaced thermal pads, etc) . It is FAR louder than any card ive had before, and runs pretty warm. Ive been looking into options, but ive never had to get an aftermarket cooler for a GPU, so i figured it might be smart to ask around. I see companies like Arctic cooling have items like the accelero (but they are pretty ugly) . Id like to find a AIO option, but the ones ive found are ridiculously priced. Based on my experience with GPU cooling, my guess is poor heatsink design, the damn heatpipes are split right in the middle of the GPU chip, which makes Zero sense to me. The 1080 version has 3 or more pipes too, the 2 the 1070 has dont seem great, or atleast they arent in my case.

this is the HS design, those pipes are placed poorly IMO. but regardless, this thing is loud aF, and id like to improve its cooling, so here i am.
gigabyte-gtx1070-g1-gaming-review11.jpg

As an FYI to anyone who might need to know the Thermal pad sizes (as theyre listed incorrectly in the places ive looked, the RAM is .5mm, the other strip next on the right is 1mm, and the strip furthest to the right in the pic above is actually 2mm (not listed that way anywhere i looked, but it is 2mm)

I appreciate any helpful suggestions.

The heat sink is fine probably. I would just take the shroud off and put your own fans, it's probably the cheapest solution and it will be quite (depending on the fans of course).

Since you mentioned the ticking fans thought it was a real shame that Prolimatech never to my knowledge sold the fan bracket they did for the MK-13 as i still use mine today as you can fit 2x120mm fans to it and if i remember right you can even fir 2x140mm fans to them too.

Other fan bracket coolers i have noticed at least never seemed any were close to it.

Hey maybe drop them a email and see if they have any laying around just maybe P.

I would take off the other fans and shroud and temperately zip tie 2x120mm fans to it and see if that improves it by much.

Arctic Accelero Twin Turbo II or Xtreme III. Accelero Mono PLUS is also listed as working on a 1070 but im not sure how effective would be... Whichever is the cheapest option for you.

I pulled the exact same cooler off my 1080Ti so i know that it can run like ass

:EDIT::

I see you said no Arctic. Better go for a kraken G12 then

Can the heat sink be removed from the Arctic cooler? Meaning can it be used without the fan & the plastic shroud that it comes with ?

sure, its just plastic clips holding it on incase you want to use other fans. though it seems a bit of a waste. The fans really aint so bad at least the ones on my Xtreme IV aint.

Morpheus II is a beast. You could probably cool a GTX 1070 Ti passively with it. Or slap a couple super quiet fans on it. If noise is a major concern.

What's that brand with the GPU AIOs nobody's heard of...? They didn't seem too outrageously priced.

Oh yeah. ID-COOLING. They've got a bunch. This one here's pretty cheap.

Well, the G1 is right at the top cooling wise.... not sure why its "warm" unless it's bren messed with. As you can see here, it outperforms the competition in this respect. At 67C, it's 13C below the point where I would consider replacing the cooler. My recommendation would be to pick up some Gelid Extreme and some 17 w/ mk pads and remount. If ya want more than that, only option I'm comfy recommending is full cover water block

Any chance you try just 2 fans zip tied to it to see if it''s the fans or cooler or even both ?.

As the cooler might be working well enough so some thing like this might be all you need, and if you can wait they are much cheaper from China.

Just trying to save ya some money

as of this morning my temps have dropped 13C at idle, and around 15C under load..
i have scanned, checked drivers, and a slew of other stuff, and still cant nail down what the hell has changed that might have this effect.
The only thing that is different, is the new windows update rolled out , other than that, im lost as to how i suddenly dropped a massive chunk of heat.
unless the thermal pads needed more time to acclimate?
im lost, but happily lost none the less.

any way, case closed.
thank to all who offered advice.

maybe it was just havve a brain fart HA.

It was idling at roughly 43c & during gameplay it sounded like a vaccuum. There was no mistaking it. Its a triple fan card, & it gets loud. But i ran hitman 2 this afternoon & it was whisper quiet & cold as santas farts.

Make a note of the fan speed

I have a custom profile set. This video card has that silent fan function, where the fans don't turn on until it hits 50°C ,and it was super annoying because what it would do is hit the temperature limit ,and the fans would kick on ,which makes this weird annoying noise ,and then about 20 seconds later they would turn back off again because the fans would drop the temp back down, and then they turn back on again after another 20 seconds. It would do this on ,and off, on and off, until I said this is enough ,and changed it to custom

Edit:
I think I just figured out what it is. I change the power profile in Nvidia control center to adaptive. I'll bet a dollar that's what it was, because before it was on maximum performance

see here, even with the fans off, now it is sub 40C...

Same BS i have with the eVGA 1060 i have here, needing to run some thing like Afterburner to actually better manage the fan sound\temps.

BTW, had an issue with my middle son's GFX cards on his previous builds. He started with a Phantex PH-YC14PE (orange) cause it matched his white / orange color scheme. And sticking with air he had twin 970s. I had not experienced this before as our own previous SLI builds were WC'd, but the top card was 10C hotter than the bottom. Case had a PSU shroud and as heat off the bottom GPU was feeding the top card kinda expected. However, the designers at Phanteks include pre drilled screw holes on the side of the HD cake. Popped in a 120mm 1500 rpm fan and the temps evened right out. So if ya don't see much air flow down under, this is a viable solution ... in the past I have zip tied fans on the back of those cages... worked fine.... so does a dollop of silicone caulking

Just an update to anyone who might care. The SPHINX Thermal pads are really working well

this card (that was once hot as hell), has dropped to cold as ice , since a repaste & Thermal Pad switch & Change in Nvidia control panel power management. even with fans set to 0%, for hours, this thing barely breaks 35C. Its not as cold as My CPU, which lives in the 20C-30C world, but its cold for a GPU, especially for a GPU thats not idle. These Thermal pads were the cheapest ones i could find, & I can officially swear by them, they are great, and nowhere near the price of those Fujipoly extreme ones that run $40 for a tiny square. If your looking to swap thermal pads, go on amazon, and search SPHINX . They're $7 for a 5" square

GPU (not idle, but not heavy either)
Capture.PNG

CPU runs cooler as its under a beastly AIO, even for 6 cores running 4.0Ghz, its still icy(this is just a snapshot, as its not about the cpu, so i didnt include long term grap of cpu)
