I would say get a roku. But which version is up to what the user wants in the feature set. Even though I lost respect for CNET, I still think you should watch these videos comparing 2 different versions of the Roku box against the Apple TV. It can possibly help you make your decision. Here..

Roku LT

and

Roku XDS

Edit: I browsed a little more on youtube and found a few more videos of different versions of Roku..

Roku 2 XS

However, the easiest way to decide what features are in which Roku box, just simply go to Wikipedia..

We have the Roku 3 and it's been sweet. I have had the LG blu ray players with channel and the PS3 which offers very few and the Sony ones too and the ROKU owns them all without question.

There is many many channels for the ROKU 3 which some you have to pay for like Netflix.. Only real downer is that it has no Youtube but shiii one can live without youtube lol.

Theirs to many channels to list here were with others most can be counted on one or if you lucky 2 hands lol.

You can add storage though a memory card too and can be used as wired and wireless to your router. And from my testing it takes a whopping 3.3watt max even when playing Netflix with 5.1 surround at highest quality. And some thing else i noticed with all the others is that they do not show you ALL available programs although there is a catch with the ROKU is the same but you can buy a $4 apps that allows you too see all available programs as if you were checking with a computer.

O yeah the menu's are smooth like they are with a PS3 which is nice as most have a terrible lag.

And to add channels you just go to the below link and add them a lot can be added from the device it's self too.
http://www.roku.com/channels/#!browse

The bad about the ROKU i think is that there is no OFF or standby but it's not like it's taking 20+ watts now is it.

Warranty is 3 months

And not so much of a issue but i think they should of put a few vents on it and guessing they did not due to looks.

Credit card\Debit card details are required on sign up, we used a old card nearly out so if the data did get stolen it be pointless to anyone lol. Although when buying some thing you have a pin number that needs to be entered so not anyone can just buy shit.

Forget the old Roku's maybe as well spend the extra $10-$30 and get the ROKU 3 lol.

EDIT:

I forgot a great feature of the ROKU 3 which is that you can plug headphones in to the remote so no long as cables along the floor.. And the remote is wireless not infrared so it is possible to use the remote from the other room.
