Please verify your size requirements.

Also, what do you need in a stand? I ask because my monitors must have height adjustment too.

Lastly, what do you primarily use your monitor for? Gaming? Office projects? Graphics editing? Video viewing? Something else?

The thing to remember is that all monitors will have a perfectly sharp picture, because they're digital and connected via a digital link. (I'll bet someone tries to argue with me on this one...) They'll vary in picture quality of course, such as detail in dark areas, off-angle viewing, colour banding etc, but the sharpness will always be there.

Your requirements for CAD and gaming are somewhat conflicting. You'll want IPS for CAD and TN for gaming ideally, so you'll have to compromise. Unfortunately, there's no one display technology that has it all at the moment. However, a good quality TN display, such as my TN-based BenQ XL2720Z that refreshes at 144Hz and has a strobing backlight is fantastic for games. Looks pretty good on the desktop too. In short, it's got a lovely picture.

I see that you've got an RX 580, so you might want a monitor with FreeSync, which mine doesn't have. BenQ do make one, though.

As to the original question, I would have said let me ask you this... I need to do a repair, what do you think is rge best tool to use...screwdriver, wrench or hammer. The point I am getting at is ... kinda need to know what you want to accomplish.... take out a screw, put in a bolt or bang in a nail would result in different answers. The subsequent clarification is great but still vague to an extent and will limit my answer.

In my office (own a consulting engineering firm), I build all the boxes and select all the equipment. From 9 - 5 , we use quality TN 144 hz panels, two monitors on each desk ... currently have 1080p, but next round will be 1440p. IPS is absolutely useless here ... the color key you use to easily identify lineweights (widths) for each layer on screen is all lost when the prints are all made in black and white and all red means is that the printed black line is 3mm wide and yellow means the black line drawn is 5mm wide.

Morever... the IPS backlight glow often makes it hard to distinguish light color lines (< 1mm on screen) drawn against the typical black CAD background ... contrast is key in CAD and most IPS panels are weak here.... unless you wnat to sping for 2-3 times the proce if a TN panel. And if you one of the rare outfits that do use color when printing for CAD Drawings ... as we do... for example you want to show electric in orange, waste in red and water in blue... it makes absolutely no difference what shade of each color is used.m It's not like the blue water pipe you drew needs to be color realistic, especially since it won't be blue and will be underground or inside a wall.

The main CAD screen runs off the GFX card and the 2nd screen for tool palettes, spreadsheets, PDFs etc runs off the IGP. AutoCAD 2D and 3D provide the best performance with GTX cards, which is nice cause, after hours, us engineering nerdy types are prone to playing games. :) ... and again GTX rules here.

Rendering OTOH is typically the province of Quadro cards and, if color accuracy matters, IPS screens. Given the price of the model selected, IPS is definitely off the table. There are cheap IPS screen but frankly the best use I can find for them is to hang "post-it" notes on. Never seen a 1080p IPS that I'd pay for under $450. Have an older $1200 Dell UltraSharp IPS that sits here unused.... covered with "post-its" :)

In short, for CAD .... a quality TN monitor is the choice as you have no need for color accuracy and a great TN monitor is about half the cost of a decent IPS monitor in this size range ... you don't want to have a PPI < 96 or so (pixels per inch). If you want to use after hours for gaming spend an extra $75 for a 144 hz model like the VG248QE

24.0 = 91.8 ppi
23.6 = 93.3 (most common)
23.0 = 95.8
22.0 = 100.1
21.7 = 101.5

Again, don't know what your needs are for rendering but frankly I don't see the value in investing $450 1080p IPS screens when fantastic fast response gaming quality 165 Hz, IPS Gaming screens are running $550 - $600. If the rendering includes "walkthrus", this is what id recommend.

Then you should go for TN + FreeSync and enjoy some quality gaming! :cool:

Dell Ultrasharp monitors are really good imho- I would recommend a U2414H or a U2417H. Both have solid fully adjustable stands and the infinity edge bezels

I have the U2414H (2 of them) and really like them

If you want good viewing angles, an IPS technology based monitor is best for this.

I'd get a refurbished or open box Vizio TV. I got a 42" 1080p for 275, it was being used as an in-store display for awhile.

Had one about 18 months, the other for 6 months, no bleed or dead pixels.

You can connect them to multiple sources, one of mine is connected to my main PC on the DP and the HDMI ports to 2 other PC's

I much prefer IPS panels for gaming over TN. Better color options IMO.

anyone use Viewsonic?
Viewsonic is the cheap brand that companies buy because they dont want to spend a lot of money.

Viewsonic is the cheap brand that companies buy because they dont want to spend a lot of money.
That does not mean they can't or don't make quality monitors that meet the needs of more demanding buyers.

Like most brands, ViewSonic makes several "tiers" of monitors. I mean look at Corsair. Their low-end, entry level power supplies are pretty cheap and not normally recommended while their top tier power supplies are some of the best out there.

Many ViewSonics have received very good reviews, like this one or this professional grade ViewSonic that was praised for its "outstanding color performance" and "uniformity".

It would be a mistake to dismiss ViewSonics just because they also make low cost monitors (that happen to serve the needs of many businesses just fine).

Edit comment: Fixed fat-fingered typos.

I recently got a LG 22MP68VQ-P monitor. 1080p IPS panel with AMD FreeSync and it is really good for the price.
