Looking for placeholder upgrade...

So, several years ago (Skyrim release, anyone?) I spent a lot of time deciding where I wanted to be, and built my current box. The 2500k would let me play with overclocking if I wanted, and 8Gb was a good starting point. As time went on, I've upgraded to 32Gb, and I'm running a Palit 2070 8Gb these days. The video will roll over to the new box, obviously, but most of the rest of the system will slide to the side. Below is what I'll have available to me for a new system, and I think at this point, what I'm looking for is a "worth it" mark: the point on a motherboard/processor/RAM setup that makes it worth the trouble to upgrade, and still be a solid enough box to hold out for at least 2-3 more years.

I'd like to be over the 7000-series i5 mark, as I'm looking at Stalker 2, and drooling, and the 7th gen is minimum. But I know I can't afford a current gen setup, or even probably a 10th gen. Do I just need to barely break into the 7th generation, and hold out for a few years, or is it worth it to try to push into 8th or 9th gen? Where's the best price vs performance break in those ranges? Anyone who's been running something in that range seriously happy with their choices? I'm not dying to overclock, and I'm a gamer primarily: no video editing needed . Thanks for the input everyone!!

I'll probably end up with 16Gb, altho I might be able to push to 32, depending on the cpu/board. As for the budget, it's honestly not set in stone. The 7-9th gen processors are all pretty close to $200 from what I was seeing, and the motherboards I'm betting I'll have to get closer to $400 than I'd like... for that matter, anything above $300 is going to make me cringe heheh.
Really, it's not so much a "I have this much to spend", and more of a "this gen processor made the best improvements for price, but the others weren't that great".

What intrigues me is the fact that it recommends an R5 1600X on the AMD side.

There's quite a performance disparity between the i5-7600K and the R5 1600X, especially in single-threaded performance.

One of the CPUs I have is a Xeon E3-1270 V3, which is virtually identical to an i7-4770 (non-K). Single-core performance is similar to first-gen Ryzen, but obviously, Ryzen has better multi-core. But this chip can be had for between $50 and $80, and with some searching, I'm sure you could find a Haswell motherboard for a decent price.

Obviously, if you go the Xeon route, OCing is out of the question.

But this also begs the question, how does your OCed 2500K compare to a 1600X or 7600K in terms of single-threaded performance?

Well, I have an i5-7600K and 16GB@2400Mhz....and a Z-chipset board, but I've never OCed it. 7th generation is pretty much second hand buy IMO at the moment. You can get new stuff, but if you are going for example a mini ITX board, it's a hard find. 8th-9th gen you can get away with way more stuff. Also, for Intel I'd vote for more RAM than faster RAM (personal choice). I'd rather have 32GB@2400Mhz than 16gb@3200Mhz.

If you could find a 3770K and just drop in would be fun to compare.

The Stalker requirements are based on "typical configurations".
Something like a 4790K with your 2070 is probably faster than 7600K+1060 in most cases.

My 2500 is still solid, but I've not pushed anything serious at it for a while. GuildWars 2 is about all I've been running for about a year. Like I said, I did some serious thinking before I went with the 2500k, and it's stood the test of time pretty damn well heheh. Yeah, I saw that new date earlier, which is what made me decide I needed to start looking serious heheh.

The "fastest" CPU on LGA1155 is the Xeon E3-1290 V2, but it looks like you can get a 3770K for about half as much (around $110 to $120), which is most likely the better option since it has an unlocked multiplier.

Have to agree. You can even cheap out on mem @ 3000/3200 if need be as it wont make much difference.

Probably get something like 8400, 9400F or 10400F, 6 cores will be a good choice to hold out a couple of years.
Also lower end CPUs from later generations are usually a better choice than higher end CPUs from earlier generations.

Option 2: This is a good option too.

Also, maybe look at the i3 12100F when it's in stock. It's a quad core with hyperthreading giving it 8 threads total. This i3 should walk all over your 2500k. It boosts to 4.3ghz stock. The 2500k was a great chip I had one, but man wait till you try something newer. I jumped from a 2500k to a Ryzen R5 2600 ($179) and it was like night and day. Good luck!

EDIT: Night and day for Gaming! lol forgot to add. Regular surfing and stuff not a big deal, but I had no idea what I was missing out on for gaming.

EDIT #2: I dug deeper.. lol

Option 3: This is a 10th gen CPU,MB,DDR4 for $284.96.

Option 4: This is still 10th gen but it's an i3 but a beefy i3 CPU,MB,DDR4 for $224.97. The i3 looks like a great upgrade and even faster than the Ryzen 5 3600 and i5 9400F. This would the best option upgrade path. You and grab an i5, i7 or even i9 later down the road. It's a quad core with hyperthreading.

As a follow up, I've moved into an MSI Z490 with 32Gb and an i5 10400 series. Installed them all to the LianLi custom that I bought a few years ago, and a Corsair 750w. Stuck my WD NVMe in, and loaded up Windows X Friday night, runs great, especially with all the crapware and phone-home stripped heheh. Only issue I have is the Sunbeam controller immediately smoked at least one channel when I hooked it up: everyone knows that smell, and MAN it freaked me out!

On a completely unrelated note, when you realize there's about 100gb of data on an NVMe you've not touched in months, you should probably not say "Eh, I doubt I'd need it if I haven't needed it by now...." *sigh* nothing earth-shattering (as far as I know), but frustrating heheh.

As a huge data hoarder, I have had situations where I deleted something one day because I didn't think I'd need it, and then a while down the line I realized that I needed it.

And that's one reason why I have 11.6TB of data on my server.

One of us! haha It's my only vice. hehe I just grabbed an 8tb drive for my home server. Other drives 1x M.2 1TB, 1x 60gb ssd, 2x 120gb ssd, 3x240gb ssd, 3x 1tb SSD, 1x 1TB SSHD, 1x 2tb HHD, USB3 Drives 2x 4tb, 8x 2tb, 4x 1tb. Other drives are spread out in 3 other machines. The usb3 drives I use for backups. I also have a box of maybe 15 old hdd's ranging form 250gb to 1tb from old systems. A lot came from my fairly large list of rigs that I used for WCG. I think at one time I had over 30+ rigs crunching for WCG. It consumed me.. lol I'm sure I forgot some drives.. haha
