I'm was wanting NAS for all my non gaming needs. Games get the SSD...priorities. I want my blu ray collect, saved show, musics and all that good stuff on there. But I was thinking I'd be spending unnecessary money and I could go the direct attached route with a big external HD. I'm primarily using this with my HTPC. I"m not sure if there would be a big difference in the speed rate or not. My top download speeds are 1.9 MB/s on the network and I know the external HD would use my on-board usb 2.0 or I could a 3.0 card.

Are you looking at adding something like the IcyDock 4-bay external storage? Or an actual NAS? If I understand, you, you want the storage driv(s) outside of your case. Is that correct?

Yes. My htpc doesn't have much space in it for multiple drives inside. Personal nas vs external.

I actually own this last one by AMS. If you are going to use theses for multiple drives and not RAID, you will need to make sure if you use eSATA that you have a port-multiplier capable card.

All are just external storage that your PC will "see" as additional HDD.
