Looking to buy a NAS Hard Drive

Something along these lines - LaCie 1TB.

Intended use is mainly for storage of photos, videos, backups etc...

Would like to hear your opinions as to which brands and specifications I should be looking for, and which to avoid.

That one isn't all that bad! You may be able to get yourself a 1tb internal HDD and an external enclosure for a bit cheaper.

don't get LaCie products!! they're extremely expensive compared to other brands!! make your own external!!

I have a D-Link 323.
You can put in whatever size disks you like.
Does RAID 0 or 1 if you want.
Setup was very easy.

I have a pair of 320s in RAID0 for a total of 640GBs.
Works great for what I needed, which was simple file storage.

The included LaCie Ethernet Agent software enables direct access to shares: one public that anyone can access locally and another password-protected private share

This thing requires installing stuff on the PC to access (the agent software). That's a PITA, not as secure as using inbuilt security, not as flexible as running it's own web-based setup. A bit like the WD and Netgear versions.

Keep looking. Get a Buffalo linkstation or similar, or build your own using a X27D or similar. With an x86 based system you can load all sorts of stuff, incl. things like OCR software, MP3 encoders, private address books, vBulletin for your LAN to record your own wiki/data/to-do's etc. etc.

What's the difference between these two drives?

LaCie Network Space 1TB Gigabit Ethernet NAS Hard Drive £123.04

and

LaCie Internet Space 1TB Gigabit Ethernet NAS Hard Drive £149.49

What's the difference between a 'network space' and an 'internet space'?

I'd like a drive which is accessible from other computers not in my network. Is this not possible with the first one?

I'd prefer the first one for its colour.... the second one looks too macintosh... :ohwell:

They look exactly the same to me. One advertises a "personal web portal" while the other advertises that you can access it remotely through FTP. I'm pretty sure that's the same thing. Perhaps the "Internet" version has some sort of "user friendly" program so you don't have to manually input the FTP address?

I think the White one is "optimized" for Internet access sounds like it has a remote login feature/website-based login, BUT according to the description you can still access the black one via FTP.

I'm looking for something which would enable me to transfer saved backups from work onto it at home, and vice versa.

What I'm looking for is that in case I'm not at work, my dad would be able to get on the net, access the drive I have at home, and upload the files directly there. And also that people at work can access my drive and download the work files on it...

Which might be the best choice?

Dont know if it is better or not.

Just make sure you get a NAS that doesnt require agent software you need to install on your PC.

TPU recommends QNAP. I've never used one. We (used to) use buffalo linkstations, but now we use home-build NAS on x86 that allows me to install other software and services.

I agree with Lemonadesoda on this one.
At work we recently bought a NAStorage rack from Ingrasys which requires such software.
Its a real PITA.
We tried to get support from Ingrasys since it doesn't update the Fimware, it's been about two weeks and we still haven't had a reply from them.

Don't get a Netgear "toaster", or anything like it.

I had a bunch of stuf on a 250GB mirror on mine and when one of the drives (WD) failed, the other one became garbage.

Well, I bought the LaCie Internet Space NAS....

I found out that I can use it as a normal NAS (accessible from my home network only) or connect it with USB like a normal external hard disk without needing any software.

Then it has the disk with software so that you can go online from any pc in the world and access the disk through website using username and password.

Well, so far I can't complain... I'm loving it... :rockout:
