Hey guys,

recently i have been chatting with the guys on TS and decided on sticking with AMD especially since their new drivers are BOSS. I am coming into ~2000 soon and am looking to upgrade from my Gigabyte 5850 1GB card to either a 7970 or a 7950. I run a Hanns-G 27.5" 1920 x 1200 monitor. Which card would be best if I want to play maxxed? I don't think 450 is what I am willing to go to so... like maybe a max of 420?

Any suggestions with reasons why and such?

Thanks. ps. no MSI please. I had a 670 that was craptastic from factory. prolly isolated incident.

You can a 7970 for $400 even. A 7970 is well within your budget if your max is $420 for a gpu.

According to the new 12.11 graphs. The non ghz 7970 is 15% faster than the non ghz 7950. The 8xxx series should be 25% on top of that. The 7950 is the better bang for the buck but if you want more performance than the 7970 is it. I got a 7970 because I did not expect to be upgrading a gpu anytime soon. At 1080p it is more than I need currently and will probably last me 3 years with the games I play maxed out. So I hope. I also got a 7970 because I hope to upgrade to 1440p and a I needed something more than my 6950 to play maxxed out at 1440p.

Hope that helps.

I got the saphire 7970 OC. Mostly because I planned on removing the stock heatsink and it had big vrm sinks. The stock sink is 2.5 slots big but uber quiet. I believe xfx has a better warrenty though.

Not as isolated as you might think regarding MSI or the 600 series in general. I just had to send back one of their 660 Ti cards for a refund, and there are much more than the usual numbers of people having problems with 600s in general, even with trusted brands like EVGA. Then there's the ASUS TOP 600s having been made in such limited quantities. I'm smelling lingering problems fixing that base layer process defect that kept the 680s limited in supply at launch.

I'd say get a 7970 if you can afford it. I may go with a 7950 myself, and I had previously sworn off AMD for good. I'd kinda rather see how that reshuffle AMD's new Senior Managers are planning goes first though. Talk is they'll be cutting 10-30% of their Canadian staff and outsourcing graphics engineering god knows where.

BTW, where the heck are the 7950 GHz Edition cards that were said to be coming 3 months ago?

The best price perf card is HD 7950. Overclocks like a beast. clock for clock HD 7950 is 3 - 5% slower than HD 7970.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Sapphire/HD_7950_Vapor-X/31.html

this sapphire hd 7950 boost for 270 bucks with mail in rebate and a game bundle worth 170 bucks is insane.

SAPPHIRE 100352-2L Radeon HD 7950 3GB 384-bit GDDR...

If you want HD 7970 get the sapphire hd 7970 oc

All over the place:

hd 7950 boost

But they are called.... "boost state" "boost clock" or even "OC boost"!
Not that it matters much since they are overclocked 7950 with high voltage set in BIOS and crappy boost technology. So it's better to get a regular one if intended and overclock it yourself.

On the other hand for Killer_Rubber_Ducky. I'd say get the 7970 non GE, they are to be find under 400$ including and awesome game bundle and OC it yourself. Can't go wrong. As for which brand others will help surely, I'm an Nvidia user.

I would not get a boost/ghz card. Much better to overclock yourself. As for brands sapphire, xfx, asus, and msi are all good. You will find bad stories for all brands. I just chose saphire for basically the cooling setup on it.

Thanks Crap Daddy, guess I missed that "Boost" was pretty much same as "Ghz Ed". Might just try a regular version of a good brand like Sapphire though. I really hate this up and down roller coaster boost tech.

It's not just my personally having had a problem with my 660 Ti that I'm considering a 7950. It's a combination of the overall hit and miss problems even with big Nvidia partners like EVGA on the 600 series, and AMD having recently improved their driver performance quite a bit with Cat 12.11. I also like that Guru3D, Rage3D and XtremeSystems tech heads see enough value in their product to offer tools such as RadeonPro. Lastly, though I still worry about more driver issues than with Nvidia, like I experienced with past ATI cards, I feel AMD needs help staying strong to keep the overall CPU and GPU industries competitive and fair.
