Hey guys,

I am finally going to replace my aging Sapphire Dual X 7970 OC card.

I am staying AMD as I want to go FreeSync.

I want to go Freesync2 but currently those monitors are too expensive and too few so I am thinking about going with a stepping stone approach. Something like a RX 580 and a newer 2560x1080 or 2560x1440 Freesync display until Navi and the newer Freesync2 HDR displays flood the market and drop in price.

Thoughts?

Recommendations on cards? I dont want to spend a lot of money but want to make sure I have 8GB of VRAM.

I have considered staying with Sapphire but they tend to be on the expensive side still. I hear good things about XFX and Gigabyte these days.

Thoughts on the monitor?

This is what I was looking at: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01B9IDLAW/?tag=tec06d-20

i cant speak for amd cards by GB, but they tend to downgrade components after first reviews are out on Nv cards.

they dont mention anything on product site/manual/box, nor do they lower prices. just a cheap money grab without informing customers over potential lower ocing potential.

and their "lower" tier custom cards seem to have lower end heatsinks, when most other brands keep the heat sink identical,
and only adjust typ/size of fans, and/or amount of heatpipes.

i mean the 1070 windforce i had felt cheaper and was significantly lighter than the 1060s i used for builds (asus/zotac/evga).

as recent amd/nv cards are mainly limited by power/voltage, cooling is one of the only things that really makes a difference for overall ocing/performance, so i would recommend looking for the coolest running card (msi gaming).

I like Sapphire, though they usually don't have the best aftermarket coolers on them. I'd still get Sapphire.

I'm enjoying using this monitor: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071G6PGP7/?tag=tec06d-20
For the price and quality of that monitor it's a no-brainer.. actually 2nd in command from Nexius is part of the our RTG group and they have an HDR freesync 2 monitor out.

A lot of the professional gamers use the monitor that you use erocker...

And @Killer_Rubber_Ducky the MSI GamingX RX580 8gb card would be an excellent choice.

Just keep waiting, just keep waiting...

Go for the aftermarket Vega56 and call it good, your choice of brand. Buying a GPU shouldn't be difficult at all.

Look at reviews and benchies, pick what you want per performance and price, and go with it.

I agree, reference cards use better components but have crappier cooling. EK now usually only make water blocks for reference cards so for me that's a plus

So I guess the question is, what is Navi for? Is it going to be a gaming card or a compute card? If it is a compute card, Vega makes more sense but I would rather wait for it to drop in price a bit more. Also, how does it compare in power draw to my HD 7970 Dual X OC Sapphire card that pulls 300W? the TDP is at least 250W too.

i only get gigabyte cards for nvidia models, for amd models i love sapphire or also powercolor, XFX has been making interesting models of AMD radeon Series,
my two cents,

Not sure when you got the last GB card, but everything since gtx 700 has been gimped once they got tested/reviews (component quality wise)
They silently drop R1.1/2.0, without even listing the changes ANYWHERE (product box/manual/website etc) or dropping price.
Even on the MB they start to do that.
Maybe not on their top cards, but then again, other brands (msi/evga/asus/zotac) dont do it at all, so for me the main reason why im avoiding them (unless free) and not recommend GB anymore.

gtx 770 had samsung ram, by the time i was interested in buying one R1.1 was out and was running different ram (dont remember brand), that didnt clock anywhere to what R1.0 with samsung chips would do.

I'm moving from an MSI GTX970 to an Asus Rog Strix RX580 8Gb, mainly because I bought a Samsung curved 27" monitor with Free Sync in July.
It's nearly a sideways move, but where I live, the prices of anything beefier are a little crazy. Besides, the reviews of the Asus RX 580 are very favourable generally and it runs pretty cool.
Actually, my wife bought it yesterday and has hidden it somewhere in the house ready for Christmas, so the waiting is rather tense.

Aren't the prices of the RX 580 crazy these days because of mining? You probably wont like my answer but I would rather wait for Navi to come out and then see what I should do. By then maybe the RX 580 will be cheaper as well, and there might be better choices for a monitor. I know waiting is hard, you will probably need the money for something else, but if you can, just wait it out. This is just my 2 cents.

Yes they are crazy because of mining and ruining prices for the rest of us.
Down here in Argentina, new tech like Navi and even vega are priced at a premium and then some more...like 5x sometimes, so the tactic is to wait awhile.
For the Asus RX580 I paid about US$425, which is cheap for where I live.

Vega is probably the most compute oriented card AMD ever made. So I am not sure what you are basing your assumptions on. All GPU architectures are now designed for compute , even mobile SoC GPUs like Mali from ARM. Graphics cards as in "only for graphics" are long gone.

Navi is still a long way off , buy a 56 undervolt and OC it and call it a day.

No. Chances are very real you will be waiting for much longer than anticipated AND get served with a product that doesn't deliver. Ask all the people who waited on Vega :p

I would have no hesitation in recommending the Asus Strix RX580. Santa brought mine on Xmas eve and whilst it isn't a huge leap from my MSI GTX970 (which is a fantastic card), it's really showing a big difference in games like Forza Horizon 3, GTA V and Ghost Recon Wildlands. Perhaps it's the 8Gb Vram and the fact that I can now use FreeSync which my monitor supports?
And those triple cooling fans, wow! Never goes much over 60c.

Go for atleast a 390X, If you are waiting for Navi Grab a 390X or 570/580,
if not Grab a Vega56 and call it a day, you cant go wrong with any of those suggestions, you can always sell parts off too
