Looking To Power Custom Laptop With Inverter

Hopefully you can help me.

I’m looking to power my custom made laptop. It’s 19.5 v and 9.23a output. Not a gaming one but half decent. I use a lot in the road for working in inc some graphic design work

I was going to buy an inverter and from what I can see I here 500w will be over kill but it’s better to have too much and not need it than have enough. Il mainly use it why we’re driving not when we’re stopped. Infact I’ll unplug it whenever we do stop.

Just a little worried about frying my laptop. Will my Laptop be safe to use with this? I’m fed up of it dying in long journeys

I’m looking at something like https://www.amazon.co.uk/Green-Inve...nection-500W-Pure-Sine-Wave-12V/dp/B07VB3N5SR

Car ciggerette style outlets typically won't deliver over 300W, yeah.

So I may as well just get a 300w one. Will that be ok for my voltage or an page?

someone mentioned I may need a better connection to my battery.

I’m happy to improve this as I use my laptop a lot when on the road travelling from job to job.

is there a better option than in inverter?

At your quoted wattage you should be fine with a 300W. Just don't buy over that.

What's your laptop model and spec? A car lighter socket can usually handle upwards of 10A (most rated at 15A). A big-ass 180W power brick that you get with your Alienware or XPS laptops is usually overkill for the sake of overkill (just a reason to charge you more, or has lots of headroom for top-end config).
Some of our field engineers run their laptops off ~200W DC-DC boost converters, and some have 100W Dell car chargers - no problems so far. Mostly E6540 w/ discrete graphics, but I've tried similar setup with a big-ass Precision M6800 and it was fine as well (though it was work-related, so no games or 3D load).

But if you decide to go with 300W inverter - that should be more than enough.

Thanks for that. No games or anything. It’s a custom made laptop. Good spec but nothing ridiculous. Just a decent i7 with 32gb ram. A reasonable graphics card and that’s about it. Good enough to run photoshop and illustrator and I’ve got a video editor ont here too but haven’t used that yet. It’s a good laptop for graphics etc but not one of these mental gaming ones. I was under the impression the 19.5v or 9.23a had a part to play and it too weaker wattage inverter is used it could fry it if the volt or amp is too high. Am I mistaken?

im happy to get whatever’s best to stop my laptop artery running out without risking damaging the van or laptop. The vans a transit custom 2017 so not sure what cigarettes lighter that’s got. I only pick it up Saturday

"Custom" is a bit vague. What is it based on?

Your current draw mostly depends on your laptop. So, if you hook up a 45W laptop into a 180W charger, it'll still draw ~45W from the source with slight correction for efficiency (usually average laptop chargers are 85-90% efficient, newer fancy chargers can be as high as 95% efficient). Just trying to figure out how much power you really need.

I have been using a 120v inverter plugged in to cig socket since 1993. Cig Lighter ==> Inverter ==> Laptop Brik ==> Also had a Garmin GPS that I had plugged in for driving directions. Had it in a custom van ... the ones ya take kids to disney with ... bed, nintendo, fridge., etc. When not camping, vacationing or whatever, it was a mobile office. Had a few laughs as back in the day, there was an automatic error built in (150' if i recall) so that, I assume you can't target the president's Limo or whatever. Drove to my sister-in-lawas and when driving over a bridge about 60 feet above the were, it said we were 90n feet below sea level. When we got to her house, according to GPS, ... we knocked on the door and met a 80 year old couple. SIL's house was directly behind them on next street.

I had a Belkin was about 4" x 4" x 1", no fan ... lasted me 20 years. Had 2 since both crapped out. Wish I could find another Belkin ... pretty much every popular brand I have used or anyone I know has used crapped out ... the only ones that seem to last are the fanless ones.

These days custom lappies might come with 120W for a 15" 120 Hz screen, i7-10750H CPU and GTX 1650 .... 180 watts for a 17" 144 Hz screen. i7-10875H and RTX 2080 S ,,,, 280 watts for a 17" 4k screen, i9-10900k, Z470 chipset, 2080 S w/ 4 SSDs

If ya think ya need only 300 watts, id give the BESTEK 300Watt Pure Sine Wave Model a try ... my next one will probably be a Dewalt or Krieger style device

yes there is a better option.. i just bought one.. what is commonly called a solar power station.. they are not cheap mine was £310..

its basically a 500 WH or about 45 AH self contained 12 volt lithium power pack.. it has its own built in 250 watt inverter and will charge from the mains.. car jack or solar power.. it has all the out-puts likely to be needed..

mine would run a laptop for twenty hours or so or charge it several times.. they have only one down side.. they are not cheap..

they come in all sizes.. 250 WH up to 2000 WH.. the smaller ones are very portable.. the bigger ones not so portable.. he he

the prices kind of match the watt hours.. mine is a good value one..

trog

ps.. the quoted mah is at 3.6 volt.. one cell... divide that by 3 for 12 volt amp hours.. which is around 45 AH at 12 volts..

That looks like it would be ideal but a bit pricier than I was hoping. It may be an option though if the inverter isnt an option.

Heres the details of my laptop that someone was asking about:

I found this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Goodyear-Power-Inverter-Laptop-Charger/dp/B077PB285Q but seems very cheap, maybe too cheap

I think we are beating around the simple answer:

Based on quoted peak specs of his adapter, an inverter of 250-300W or so should be fine.

A laptop in the 15in ranch like that will come with a 150-180w, the 17in with come with 230-280w. The other 17in, will come with double 240w psu, 480w total.

You can make your own lithium power supply battery bank. It wont be so fancy but usually will be cheaper. I made my own lithium battery bank for my boat. I bought the cells, hooked everything up for 12v power supply.

Hello, I have a MSI 75 Raider, and the charger is a 280w. What inverter should I buy to work with my cigarette lighter? I want to let you know that I'm a lorry driver and I have both plugs 12v (180w) and 24v (360w). What you recommend me a pure sine wave or a modification wave will be fine? I had a 500w pure sine 12v from Bestek and died after 1 month. Thanks

I'm a truck driver myself, aka lorry driver. My company truck has a 1500w inverter. The inverter in this truck is plugged directly into the battery system. Thats all I know about it, its not my truck.
