So, Im getting ready to replace my Lenovo G570 Sandybridge workhorse/Linux machine.

I have been looking in the 500-850 USD range but need some opinions. I have found some cool laptops on Newegg and one really seemed like a killer deal until I saw the review where they said installing another OS like Linux was essentially impossible. I really need it to support installing other OSes and that the hardware would work with Linux with as little hiccup as possible. Im going to list of the machines I have seen and am open to suggestions. At this point, I am brand agnostic.

I will separate by Brand:

ASUS

I would imagine the only thing you should need to install Linux on a machine is to disable secure boot. Also, considering how many threads I've seen on here about ASUS's support, I'd probably steer away from them.

For something budget-ish, you should be able to find a good deal on a 4th or 5th gen Intel Core based laptop. Linux doesn't play well with any of the hybrid graphics solutions I've seen (something HP likes to do sometimes), so you might want to keep that in mind.

Going for budget workhorse, Dell or HP would be my vote. If gaming performance isn't too big of a deal for you, then something with an i7-6700HQ should be easily obtainable. Otherwise, either current-gen i5 or last-gen i7?

Might check this compatibility list from Ubuntu too.

I want to be ABLE to play my favorite games but having a 970 or 980m is not crucial. Staying under a grand is. i like thin and lite. Im not sure about the MSI laptops either. I was leaning between the ASUS and Gigabyte laptops personally.

Very, very roughly, I've found the mobile GPU is approximately equivalent to the next lower tier desktop GPU. Example, 980m roughly equals a GTX 970, a 970m roughly equals a GTX 960, etc..

I almost bought a MSI (they seemed to be reasonably customizable/upgradable), but I ended up going with a Sager laptop instead. Ridiculously expensive, heavy, and loud, but fast.

i was ctually liking the look and reviews for the ASUS G501VW-BSI7N25. The MSI laptops seem to be all over the place in terms of user reviews. I even like the Dell and I typically hate Dell after working for their Tech support department.

This would be my recommendation. Dell's laptops are of good build quality and have proven time and time again that they are reliable. Can't really say the same about ASUS.

The MSI looks good too but has only 2GB GDDR5 in comparison and the display will probably not be as well calibrated as the Dell one. The Dell is probably sturdier as well.

Can't really comment on Gigabyte laptops... Never owned one or put one to use at work. But the GTX 950m is noticeably slower than the GTX 960m.

The Lenovo simply cannot compete spec wise (both the CPU and the GPU)

The HP lacks a dedicated GPU and HP's laptops usually get rather hot and loud. Don't like their keyboards as well.

I'd go with the Dell and equip it with a nice SSD and call it a day.

Apparently Dell still has QC problems. the reviews on that laptop show serious issues

That sucks. Never had any trouble with Dell machines in the past. Hundreds of machines (both desktop and laptop and also monitors). So far I haven't had a problem with the new XPS and Latitude 7000 series as well.

I read the critical reviews on Amazon.

I have been perusing the LaptopNinja.io website for the sub 1k laptops. They seem to praise most of the ASUS ROG laptops.

Then go with ASUS. They might have gotten better after all.
But I myself have only had bad experiences with ASUS laptops thus far (mostly from friends since I never owned one myself and very rarely if ever encountered ones in the business world). But your mileage may vary.

That is not quite in line with my personal experience. Hmm, sorry! Guess I'm not helping the cause much after all...

Edit: Just wait for Pascal/Polaris then :p

I've seen decent stuff come out of Acer's lineup. It's not high-end, but I think it's at least decent.

I've seen Lenovo bring out laptops with the same specs as Asus ROG laptops and at a lower price, reviews have been favourable for them.

Id be fine with an IGPu/APU since I have been surviving so far on an Intel HD 3000 iGPU. So long as it is the most powerful of available iGPUs that is. Basically the games I play dont have to have a 4GB GPU. Im fixing to be on the road a lot soon too as a trucker so I guess it would need to be thin and light. And Durable AF.

yeah, their Linux stuff is usually solid since they use their business line mostly and they pick solid parts.

We have 4 Asus laptops here, never had a problem.
I'd say go for Asus.

Preferably one with SSD.

Honestly every brand has problems, some just deal with them better than others. My Gigabyte P25WV2 was great for the 1st year but then the monitor board started flaking out. I have yet to have it repaired but I have a 3 year add on warranty with Newegg, so I'm well covered.

Honestly, gaming laptops are difficult to suggest. They are very hard to cool and many have problems. I will recommend Sager though as their build quality seems to be superior to their competition. They don't mind if you upgrade the ram, HDD, wifi card, gpu, or take it apart to clean it. In fact their manual details how to fully disassemble the entire machine. Their starting 14" notebook(without dedicated gpu) starts at $850. $1400 will get you a 970m with an IPS screen and a build quality comparable to a Macbook.

Good luck with your purchase! :toast:
