Looks like AMD finally made a profit!

This just in...glad to see AMD clawing back into the game a little.

"Revenue hit $1.027bn, up nine percent year-over-year "primarily due to higher sales of semi-custom SoCs." That beats analyst estimates by $68.7m. By semi-custom SoCs, AMD means the system-on-chips and graphics cores it designs for video game console makers, specifically Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. Microsoft is due to use AMD-crafted chips in its Project Scorpio console due out next year and a slim Xbox One coming this Fall. Overall, AMD expects to bank $1.5bn in sales over the next three to four years from three games console chips that will hit the shelves soon.

Net income of $69m, up from last year's $181m loss. Peering into the numbers, we see a non-GAAP operating profit of $3m versus an $87m loss a year ago."

And this can only be good for AMD. Game developers trying to milk every inch of performance from a GCN based architecture from the very beginning, will most likely work out well for the PC discrete graphics also, unless they somehow drop the ball (again).

While it does not seem like much, this type of turnaround in 1 fiscal year is pretty phenomenal, no matter what size the company. (-$87m to +$3m)

Now let's just hope they do not screw it up.

Aren't the new consoles Xbox "Project Scorpio" and PS4 NEO suppossed to run AMD chips? If so, then they'll still have some more income coming. I really wanna see Zen hype but after what happened with the Bulldozer, I doubt they really have something extraordinary to show. They have NEVER manage to get anything good since the "Age of Athlon" era.

That is correct. And I believe they have the Nintendo contract as well. I've always been faithful to AMD, and have patiently waited for Zen, but gave up and just went Skylake. I'll switch back if Zen is competitive, but couldn't wait any longer with 32nm Piledriver. It is just too hot and inefficient.

People said the same after Bulldozer launch and yet it was still selling pretty well. And it's still selling pretty well. No matter how inferior your product is, if you know how to market it, you'll be selling it. Be it presentation itself or the pricing scheme.

A company can generally recover from a single failed product line. They rarely recover from two consecutive failed product lines. Regardless of how well Bulldozer may or may not be selling, the bottom line is that it hasn't sold anywhere near well enough to keep AMD going, which makes it a failure. If Zen is a similar failure, AMD will run out of cash very quickly.
