The problem is when those cosmetic only become extremely coveted items and intern sell for some type of legal tender to those not willing to "chance" it. I refrence CSGO.

They should remove the word gambling all together and use the word chance instead. Then this would simply be a matter of removing the chance from the transaction ,meaning reveal what it is the person is buying, everything else could stay in place, you'd just need to implement an identifier system......the chance game is ended, the gambling is ended ,everyone can carry-on with their transactions. The reason they don't want to do this though is because they know there will be a massive drop in public interest which will therefore prove the chance a.k.a. gambling was what was drawing the consumer, & not some stupid yellow and black gun camo, etc

That would be “acceptable” to me, although it’s still gambling.

I remember my nephew had a gun camo that was worth a lot of dollars, & some stupid knife that was worth many hundreds of dollars.....my guess is its not because the knife or camo is sooooo good, but rather because its rare, meaning the chance of finding it in a random transaction is little

Should not be a thing at all in a game that you already payed for.
Is not additional content (even if dlcs are just piece of the game cut off ) that can worth something or not.

If you're paying for said loot boxes, gambling. If they're free or you're paying for a specific item, not gambling. The former is simply chance and the latter is not unlike any normal digital transaction. It's money + chance = gambling. What the gambling is on/about is details.

I remember my nephew had a gun camo that was worth a lot of dollars, & some stupid knife that was worth many hundreds of dollars.....my guess is its not because the knife or camo is sooooo good, but rather because its rare, meaning the chance of finding it in a random transaction is little
Yup, very limited supply and high demand from the (gambling) addicts.

As far as the non pay 2 win stuff, its still a money making scam. Just give the skins away. Games like Overwatch already cost $40-60. I remember when skins were free to be modded into games like UT and you didn't need to pay extra.

A game of chance that either has a monetary barrier to play or has the potential for monetary profits. Sounds like gambling to me.

The way I see it, it's not just the unknown of what you're buying with these loot boxes, it's the hideous amount of hours it takes to get such things via progress as well. The two combined are why so many are upset. Hell, if players can get outraged just by people buying scavenger bots for Dead Space 3 in an sp campaign, then they'll sure as hell get ticked off by these methods in a player competitive situation.

The worse parts of it, besides the obvious of addicting kids to gambling, is it's a holiday release title, and there's no real win for the end user. You're either ponying up way more than you should have to in order to stay competitive when the servers are most busy, or lamenting that you're poking along like a snail taking forever to get the gear you need. This game is like the Grinch that stole the gaming customer's Christmas.

And the kicker is, there's no decent sp campaign to fall back on when you're lamenting the mp problems, since it's too short and poorly written. This seems to be botched even worse than the first installment. EA keeps betting they'll have luck rolling the DICE I guess. One has to wonder if they'll be the death of even that dev team eventually.

I want to add a disclaimer that DS3's micro trans was just for comparison, I had no issue with it. I always preferred getting the scav bots at the points you're supposed to, and felt that was plenty adequate. God how I miss Visceral, another great team that fell to EA's greed. I really hope another publisher will buy the rights to DS and keep it going, hopefully with Steve Papoutsis as studio lead, now that he's free of EA. It would also be justification if Steve names his team Vengeance.

I have no problems with gambling ingame; skins, cosmetics, fine, even if they can be sold(CSGO, Dota).

i have problems when it interferes with player progression and unlocks. XP boost? weapon unlock? character unlock? = pay to win, gamble to win.

So what if it is gambling? Can't people make a decision on their own to determine what is gambling and decide to gamble or not? Do some need the government to protect them from themselves? I could see a problem if the gambling aspect was forced. It is not, people still have a choice. It's really just as pathetic as the people coming up with these loot boxes. If governments are concerned with people getting ripped off, they need to look at themselves WAY before they look elsewhere. I guess it's too bad the gaming industry isn't paying off politicians like in other industries that only have their self interests in mind...

The problem is gambling in the traditional has laws and age limits gaming has no such protections in place. See how far a 13 year old would get in a Casino

I think it's more on PEGI and ESRB to clearly label games that have gambling by way of microtransactions. People that have a history of getting addicted to that should know to steer clear of them.

People that have a history of getting addicted have a history of not knowing to steer clear. And there is a high chance of kids circumnavigating age restriction labels.

why so many pay for loot boxes and and other content with a random chance of winning is they hope they can get a more expensive item. they end up spending more on these loot boxes then if they just bought whatever it was they wanted in the first place. its even worse when the only way you can get the item is from these loot boxes. its gambling. the problem is how much of our rights do we want to give up to protect others from themselves. its a hard question because we try to care about the people around us but how far should we limit ourselves for others. no doubt there is a problem but its more than likely going to get handled in the worst way possible.

Just slap 18+ on those games, add "Loot Boxes" to the rating description and call it a day. I made 10 euros for selling a shirt in PUBG and bought a game in the sale for that money, It was fun, would be a shame if it were to go away.

I think the issue from my perspective isn't necessarily the gambling. It's the predatory actions of the publishers. If they came out and called it gambling from the start I would have zero issue with this. Instead they literally hire psychiatry doctors to make the game addicting and then add gambling only to call them loot boxes. When I buy a game for one of my kids that's rated "E" for everyone I don't expect them to gain a damn gambling addiction. Do I think loot boxes should be banned? No. I do think it should be listed for what it is on the cover. Gambling.
