Hello guys for my next build i would like to buy two M.2 SSD one for the O.S and the second for games ( only games no archive )

I have the Asus ROG GENE z390 motherboard and this is the page where is written which type of connection M.2 SSD are compatible.

Question is :

Can i Mount this type of M.2 ? Instead of M.2 key 2280 ? What is the difference between PCI EXPRESS M.2 and all other types ?

WD_BLACK SN750 (PCI Express, 500 GB)
WD_BLACK SN750 (PCI Express, 1 TB)

Thank you for any advice.

M.2 uses PCI Express (PCIe) or SATA interface. PCIe is much faster, as I guess you understand. Optane is a kind of memory Intel and Micron has developed, not an interface.
Yes, you can use those drives with that board, but note that you use a single screw to mount both drives with, if I'm reading your manual correctly.

Full specifications show that is a M.2 2280 form factor. Should work just fine.

Hi,
Yes pci-e uses those lanes instead of pch or cpu if that is an option in bios to switch too which doesn't say it is.
If you use dual gpu this maybe an issue seeing they also use pci-e lanes obviously.

...2280 is the length of the m.2
M key well it's the only type compatible with your board.

Just for the record m.2's aren't all that much faster that you'd notice unless you move around lots of large file.
2.5" sata ssd's are just fine.

Thank you guys for the replys.

I would like to ask also what do you think is better ?

The WD SN750 pair, or a Samsung 960 EVO Plus pair ?

Doesn't matter hugely, imho. Samsung has a good reputation. I have an older WD Black and have not had any issues with it. I'd consider cost in the case of your two options.

I'm currently using 2x WD SN750 1TB on my Z170/6700k/1070 rig, and 2x Sammy 970 Evo pro's on my son's Z390/9700K/2080ti) gaming rig, and the only real difference I notice is the boot time on the Sammy's is about 1-2 seconds faster, but then again, his system is both newer & faster overall than mine anyways . The only other difference is the price of course, with the WD's being about $30 less than the Sammy's when I bought them all around a year ago....

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
Yes pci-e uses those lanes instead of pch or cpu if that is an option in bios to switch too which doesn't say it is.
Just a note here, the board and slot which the pcie m.2 module is installed determines which lanes it uses. Some slots are direct connected to the cpu for m.2, while others use pcie lanes sourced from the pch. It depends.
Thank you guys for the replys.

The WD SN750 pair, or a Samsung 960 EVO Plus pair ?

I go with the evo...

Remember.. m.2 is the connector... the 22xx numbers are the size in mm. M.2 drives can be sata or pcie/nvme based.
