Making Crossfire Work and Optimization

PEG1 and PEG settings dont matter , still only the bottom card will show 2 video cards in device manager , but when I hook the bridge or bridges up , I have to switch the display to the top card , because the bottom one wont show any display , but then the top card wont show both video cards , WTFFFF

Ok , so a little test. While on the bottom card , i went to device manager , and disabled PCI bus 1 card , which is the top card because the display still worked. If that helps anything , and the bottom card is listed as PCI bus 2 , in device manager/display adapters/properties.

They came with the system my bro ordered. I dont think it has worked from the get go. Its a cybertron PC , from tiger direct.

yea thats normal the bottom is device 1 and top is device 0.

try 8.4 hotfix or just 8.4 drivers. did they come with a cd? i would use that first

Ok so when the bridge or bridges are hooked up , doesnt matter what INIT setting is checked , they all go thru the top card only. PEG , PEG1 or PCI. But if you take the bridge off PCI and PEG goes thru top card , PEG goes thru bottom card.

Yea CD is at home , going to have to try that , if that doesnt work going to tell him to ship this POS back and build one for him.

just curious. how did he pay for it? full specs. for what those 2600 cost now, you can get a 3850 for the same price in about 3 weeks.

tell him to i'll sell my 3850s lol i want to get some 3870s

I am not trying to rehash what has already been said but I would like some clarifying on this. I want the setup for CrossfireX and how you guys learned this as well.

I am trying to setup a CrossfireX with a HD3870X2 and a HD3870 on an ECS KA3 MVP mobo with current ATI ccc 8.5 and Windows Vista.

I have tried several methods to get the crossfirex working from here and other sites such as:

install one card, then ccc then other card, then bridge interconnect and no crossfire.

install both cards, ccc then interconnect , no crossifre.

install both cards interconnect then ccc no crossfire.

installed hd3870 first and works fine, installed hd3870x2 after and it crossfires the hd3870x2 but not the three gpu's, but it will not work unless monitor is on hd3870x2. If monitor stays on 3870 i don't get video to monitor but it does bootup and i hear windows startup.

I have been connecting all power connections on cards as well as extra one on motherboard and I have used two seperate power supplies that are good for this so I am not worried about not enough power.

Where are you guys getting your procedure for setting this up or is it coming from practice and a do it till it works attitude.

I have not found a thing about any step by step procedure on ATI or Visionteks website for setting up crossfire other than throw the cards in and make sure all is connected and it should work.

I want to know some specific things:

Which cards goes in which slot, primary or secondary, and whch one goes first.

Which card gets monitor cable

If installing one card and firing up which card should you install first.

I have seen here that you guys say to throw one card in and install ccc but this did not work for me as the scores I am getting from 3DMark 06 are saying. I run 3DMark06 and get the same with and without the bridge interconnect and if i disable the 3870 from device manager so the trifire is not setting up.

In ccc it will only show the hd3870x2 in the drop down for the adapters.

Any help on this would be appreciated from those that are also having problems.

I am working on getting some answers from ATI about this situation and some kind of answer back from them will be psoted here, right now I am only getting some help form ATI's CPU PR manager who is directing me in the right direction with names. I'll keep you osted on this if I get any answers.

Thanks.

I have a feeling it's your motherboard that's not letting you do it. If you are using Vista, you should be able to have everything installed (bridges too) and install the drivers. Any chance you could post screenshots of CCC, GPU-Z, and the cards in your device manager?

^ i believe he's right, for one that board doesn't support CrossfireX. But I don't know if that make a difference with the 3k. I would figure that they would atleast run in Crossfire.

Board Info

3k series are PCI-X, and that board only has two x16. <Would that hold him back. I would think so.

I'm not exactly sure on this, but I believe XP doesn't support more than two GPU's, if you are using XP.

I'm sure XP see's multiple cards fine. I'm running XP 64-bit without an issue. XP 32-bit should be fine as well. As for the order of installing the cards, I don't do any certain order and I've been fine in both XP and Vista. I install my OS, both cards are installed and bridged. I install the latest drivers, and it works. Vista actually enabled XFire for me automatically. In XP I had to toggle it on. But, no issues at all fortunately. Jeffopus, I have no first hand experience with that motherboard or your card setup. I've only ever done XFire on a MSI K9A2 Platinum motherboard and two 3870's. But from my experience, everything was pretty damn trouble free. Might just be the motherboard your using?

At the present time Crossfire with more than two GPU's does not work with XP 32bit. As far as the order of install, it differs depending on what drivers you are using. I have however successfully gotten two 3870's and a 3850 to work together in Vista 32bit. So it's more of a XP/Vista thing than 32bit/64bit thing.

I'm not mad but if you would read before replying I would not be adding in stuff that makes no sense, CrossfireX does not work with Window XP I said it was with Vista.

The HD3870X2 only has one crossfire bridge interconnect connection on it so only one bridge is used.

As far as the motherboard not supporting crossfirex with the gpu's thta may be the case, it works fine with 2 and I have run two ati cards previously on this system without a problem.

I may have to wait till my rma'd asus mobo gets back to work on this some more.

Thanks for all the help.

what cards would that be?

yea i have to agree from what i can tell crossfireX kinda sucks in XP....dual cards works but its like 15% up from one card....

Sorry, that's why we have the system specs tab, for quick reference.:) I wish you better luck with your Asus board, as if it's a newer board it should work.
