This came as a surprise to me because I thought Bioware was done with the franchise after ME: Andromeda. There's no proposed release date for Mass Effect 5 but it's good news to me that at least there will be a Mass Effect 5. I really enjoy the Mass Effect games. BioWare is also working on Dragon Age 4. From the article:

"It looks like Bioware is working on another Mass Effect under Michael Gamble, who is a project director at Bioware. The game is in very early development, as Bioware is already working on the Dragon Age 4 and the recently announced overhauled Anthem. There is no information on the release date, since Bioware have not officially confirmed anything at this point."

BioWare is trying to get back on their feet after Anthem.

They have to milk what worked since none of their new ideas are panning out, kind of sad and pathetic really. I feel sorry for them, wait nope, I don't.

To be fair, EA as a publisher is really who is to blame for their decline, as well as product decline.

Bioware has not really done all that well generally speaking. Neverwinter Nights 2 was the last game they made I enjoyed anyway, well that isn't true, Dragon Age Origins was fun.

I don't think it's the same BioWare Studio that made ME: Andromeda. BioWare Montreal was the Studio that Developed ME: Andromeda and after that they were merged with EA Motive.

EA is the only reason I never bought this game, bad past experience will do that.

I don't think it's the same BioWare Studio that made ME: Andromeda. BioWare Montreal was the Studio that Developed ME: Andromeda and after that they were merged with EA Motive.

Half the team got taken off Andromeda to "help" finish Anthem (which is now being launched as Anthem II) so you can't really blame the studio workers too much. Getting rid of Sheppard and introducing weak new characters compared to the previous series did not help either. Add in all the "old" Bioware people leaving and the developer may as well change their name. Frankly Blizzard is going in the exact same direction as Bioware thanks to Activision. With EA's help, Bioware has gone downhill with Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic and gave us Anthem...

I enjoyed Dragon Age: Origin and ME1. ME2 and then into M3, the combat drastically changed and felt more like a third person shooter game (think Gears of War) instead of staying more of a tactical/shooter game like the first one was. I thought the story was okay overall, but it never really felt like once you got into ME3 that your decisions really had any kind of weight from the first two entries. The exploration of other planets was a neat idea in ME2, but poorly executed - they just felt like big wastes of space with nothing important. I was hoping it would be fixed in ME3, but it wasn't - all planets without being part of the main story felt like little pit stops to waste time so you could go shoot more bad guys.

I was excited when the announcement of Dragon Age 2 came out and then there was a demo available to play....eh, was just some crappy hack'n'slash game play. Huge turn off. I never followed up on anything else Dragon Age after that. I don't know without looking if there was a third game to the franchise or not.

I can't say I'm excited at all by the idea of a ME5, considering Andromeda looked to be worse than ME3 and I couldn't bring myself to play it.

I place BioWare's start of decline right after Dragon Age: Origins released in 2009 but some would say it was after Mass Effect 2. Certainly when the 2 co-founders of BioWare left the company in 2012 (Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka) it was pretty clear that BioWare was headed downhill. It's a shame because in their earlier years they made some great games like Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Neverwinter Nights, KOTOR, the first Mass Effect and DA: Origins. I would even include Jade Empire in that list but some wouldn't.

EA bought BioWare in 2007 and it didn't take long for the Developer to start going downhill after that. It took a couple of years for BioWare to really start going downhill but it did start with EA buying them.

I was excited when the announcement of Dragon Age 2 came out and then there was a demo available to play....eh, was just some crappy hack'n'slash game play. Huge turn off. I never followed up on anything else Dragon Age after that. I don't know without looking if there was a third game to the franchise or not.

Dragon Age Inquisition was the 3rd Dragon Age game.

You really should give it a try. It can frequently be had cheap. It was patched adequately enough that all the famous issues got fixed. Also, it actually does “feel” like an ME game.

Whu... where? It feels more like... well every 13 in a dozen (quasi-) open world action game in the last five years.

Seriously apart from the lore, its nothing like the previous parts to me... The open areas changed the dynamic and the whole terraforming stuff was the weirdest ever way to progress. The way the game fed its content to you is different too; the linear, story driven levels are almost gone entirely. Its really more akin to Dragon Age Inquisition than to ME. But effectively, what Bioware has resorted to is making games that are all more or less the same formula. Its a bit like Ubisoft's eternal open world, capture a tower kill bad guys sauce.

So we have different opinions. That’s why the world is great. Seriously, I allow myself to actually get into games and enjoy them, because 99.5% of the time the negatives are not enough for me to not enjoy.

People who are intensely critical of games...honestly I don’t know why they even play games. I see enough of that on every single game on Steam game discussion posts.

So regardless, to ME, it felt like a Mass Effect game.

Its not that I didn't enjoy Andromeda, it was 'okay'... but I really couldn't say that it felt like ME in the slightest - to me, yes, you're obviously at liberty to disagree... Never did it have the magic of its predecessors.

About the criticism - gaming is a business nowadays, and games have become less of artistic feat and more 'regular product'. Andromeda to me felt like the latter, the first three parts felt like the former. Its a bit like the new Star Wars movie entries. They drop on us like Call of Duties and are no longer special. The first trilogy though...

Its possible to be critical of this trend and still enjoy the 'product' for what it is. Its possible to not be over the moon every time a game is played. And why not voice those concerns? Its feedback for whatever comes next, its how games evolve.

If Bioware gets the memo and brings this franchise back to being highly focused on narrative and excellent voicing and writing.... they can easily make it great. I mean the ME universe has so much to offer... it feels as rich as Star Trek. Andromeda was a bit of a lazy 'reset'. Shoot a rocket into nowhere and 'oh look adventure'.

I started playing it and it doesn't deserve the bad rap it gets. It's not a bad game but it probably didn't need to be made either. Bioware could have shelved ME and said we are looking at a new IP or revive one of the old IPs. Basically what CD Prokekt did with the Witcher and Cyberpunk.

What I meant is so many people have stopped letting themselves feel the magic of gaming. Sure all games have negatives. But more and more people seem to be focused on just what’s wrong, when if they would just relax and enjoy what was created, they would realize that in 90% of the games there is far more magic than there are negatives.

I just find it very easy to step into whatever game I play. That doesn’t mean I am over the moon on games, it just means I let myself find enjoyment.

Immersion is a fickle beast... I've found it more difficult to get there lately, a big reason being the lack of surprise in game concepts. Its a very personal thing, that, but its much easier to get immersed when a game can surprise you from time to time, Andromeda really didn't give me that... and that's when all the silly things started standing out to me.

Very similar to how I approach my gaming time and it works out just fine for me.

I'm well aware of game issues when they have them but if its nothing too 'serious' then I can easily overlook them and not be bothered and enjoy my time with the said game.

I've also avoided Andromeda for 1 and half years cause all of the bad things I heard, even tho ME is one of my all time fav serie and played trough 1-2-3 twice already.

Gave Andromeda a try 1 year ago so the game breaking bugs were already fixed and I did not ran into anything that would ruin the game for me,finished around ~90+ hours and I honestly enjoyed the game.

Looking forward to ME 5,tho by the time its out I might replay the current ME games again.:)

If ME5 is at least twice as good as Andromeda...
...
I still wouldn't touch it with two metre long pole.

What? Bioware's Project Manager asks "Where do you want Mass Effect to go in the future? #N7Day" and that's somehow twisted into Mass Effect 5 is in early development? No, he's just asking if ME5 was made, what would it you want it to be. A conversation starter for N7 Day. Doesn't mean they're working on Mass Effect 5 at all.

LoL. Fake news. Over-emotional people also started spreading rumors about ME trilogy remaster for PC and consoles.

The article that I referenced says it is. Gamble is just asking for some feedback on what the fans would like to see in ME5. That's not an uncommon practice for Developers. Unfortunately they usually don't listen to the feedback and do what they want anyway.

In any case Mass Effect 5 is a long way off. First Bioware wants to overhaul Anthem and try to save it and develop Dragon Age 4.

It is for EA. EA has focus groups for those kinds of questions involving an NDA which is why they can keep games secret up until the E3 reveal.

I have to agree with silentbogo: fake news. Misconstruing a question for fans to raise awareness for N7Day/Mass Effect in general into effort being put into a sequel that has absolutely no confirmation it even exists.

The question at face value is worthless from a design perspective: any follow up to Andromeda will take place in Andromeda because that's the universe they invested millions into building. They're not going to throw that all away because someone on Twitter says "Alpha Centauri!"
