I've come to realize that the weakest component in my system is probably the graphics card. 96 shaders isn't all that great, and 384mb simply isn't enough these days. Recently, it seems like ATI is cooler running, more energy efficient, and faster than Nvidia—espically with the way the GTX400 series is turning out to be.

How would this card fare against my 9600gso?

You're going to see a decent bump, from reviews/comparisons it looks like the 5670 is in between your current and the 9800GT and sometimes beating the 9800GT.

Performance wise the 5670 is right around the 9800GT. You can probablly find a 5750 for close to that price and get a bit bigger jump in performance. You will benefit more from more memory bandwith with the 5670 if you use a higher resolution.

My suggestion is a 5770. Its not very power hungry nor a beast. Quite cheap at under $150 and does very well when in CrossFire.

Shoul work fine w/your 500W PSU.

Hm... I had a 9800gt before, and my 9600gso doesn't feel too far off from it. How far can the 5670 overclock? If the 5670 is indeed as powerful as a 9800gt, then it's a decent card and worthy of being bought, but not by someone who already has a 9600gso I'm afraid... looks like if I am indeed going to upgrade, the 5750 is the first realistic choice...

...which brings on my next question... about how powerful is the 5750, then? How does it stand to the GTX260?

I have a couple of 5750s in CF at the moment. A single 5750 is more or less equal to a GTX250 but not the 260. Here is W1zzard's review of the Sapphire HD5750 (my cards at the moment):

The overclocks of our card are 875 MHz core (25% overclock) and 1410 MHz Memory (23% overclock). Whoa, that's some nice overclocking, especially for a card with all-new technology. Essentially you can buy a HD 5750, overclock it to HD 5770 performance levels and party away the rest of the money.

From the few reviews I've seen the 5750 can be overclocked to match the 260. But keep in mind it will use less power so very important for a sub 500W power supply.

HD 5750 looks to be alright. i would personally bounce for the HD 5770. but i'm guessin at 19" ur gaming at 1440x900 or 1280x102, maybe even 1366x768? so the HD 5750 will do fine at those resolutions. perfect price/perf for your res

Actually idk how into dx11 u r, but here's an HD 4870 that slightly edges out the HD 5770 performance wise for $119

4870 probably wouldn't play nice with a 500 watt PSU, and they're much hotter (and a 5770 can overclock to outperform a 4870 in any case).
For gaming on a 19" screen, my 4850 does fine in almost all games. The 5750 is more powerful that it, so I'd say you'd be fine with the 5750 as an upgrade.

i suggest a 5770 - its about twice the power of the card you have now, so its a very significant upgrade.

5770 and 4870 are very similar in graphics power, with the 5770 winning in features and efficiency. as a 4870 owner, GET THE 5770!

I'd personally stay with the 9600, it is over 9000 and if you look closelyer at the 5770 you will notice it is actually under 9000

Why not a 4770 ... performance is similar to 4850/9800GTX .... and takes less power ... and a great overclocker ...
