mbox file import to Thunderbird v64

One online email service I been using for a lot of years has decided to close down and they let you extract all your emails and so on into a mbox file my problem is that by default I can't import that to Thunderbird version 64.

I done some searching around they a lot of sites recommend a add-on named ImportExportTools for Thunderbird but that add-on isn't update to support the latest version of Thunderbird and do I really have to downgrade to import this mbox file?

What you might consider doing is to create a folder in T-Bird called "Old emails" or something similar. Then forward your old saved emails to your T-Bird account and stuff them into that folder. This will also give you a new starting point in time which might be handy when looking for an old email.

Problem is this host doesn't support setting up the account in a local program.

I want to keep them original so if I need a I can find it so forwarding isn't what I am looking for.

"MBOX" stands for "Mailbox." The MBOX file is a "mail format created for organizing and storing email messages in a single text file," according to FileInfo.com. Not all mailbox programs use the MBOX file; however, a few do, such as Apple Mail, Microsoft Entourage 2008, Mozilla Thunderbird and Qualcomm Eudora. Moreover, the MBOX file can be viewed by most text editors, such as Microsoft Word, Open Office Writer and Notepad.

I don't see where that matters. Don't they let you forward emails? Forwarded emails remain intact. The header is just appended with the forwarding information.

With dorsetknob's explanation of how emails are stored in the MBOX file, it does not seem the emails would stay in the original format.
