Hi,
Which is better a 512bit bus or a 256bit bus.

Depends on the card in question. A 512 bit 2900XT is generally slower than the 257-bit 8800GTS. But yeah 512bit on identical cards would be faster.

256bit to 512bit doubles the bandwidth, so for 256bit to keep up with 512bit it would have to be clocked twice as fast.

It's dependent on your memory controller as well. A 512-bit memory bus width only gives you the POTENTIAL to get double the bandwidth of a similar card with 256-bit memory bus width.

Nyte is right, also the GPU's ability to use a 512 bit bus is arguable..even a 320-bit bus is arguable...considering both the 8800gt's and 3870's use 256-bit busses and are faster than their higher-bit-memory-bus fore-graphics-adapters...go for overall performance and needs for your goals, not just memory bus bandwidth, as you may get less than you hoped..even if marginally..some are very picky.

I heard something about a 256 being faster if it has DDR3 memory rather than a 512 with DDR2.

memory bus inst everything, depends on ram and clocks, 512 is better than 256 if both cards are identical though
